Bit of a blast from the past, noticed a guest browsing the thread.
Interesting to look back over the names and consider where their careers led them from here.
Only Tyrell and Longbottom going all the way, better than none I guess.

Most of the guys from the first academy have probably moved on to Uni and/or have another job by now. I guess quite a few of them would still be around in club rugby.

Most of the level 1 guys have been in Perth for many years with Daniel Griffiths, Nicholas Haining, Benjamin Hales, Ryan Hodson, Zack Holmes, Oliver Hoskins, Gary Neugebauer, Bruce Smith-Wright and Heremaia Te Aute going through the schoolboys set up over the past two or three years. Some of these like Nick Haining, Ben Hales, Zack Holmes and Oliver Hoskins were born and read here as an added bonus.

Ethan Carlisle is a good half back and his dad will most probably be the Premier Grade coach for Bayswater in years to come

Development of young players is the key, congratulations to all these players for their selections. Who knows who the next Beale or Elsom is amongst these guys.

If you know the current crop of Academy lads, you will see that there is a pool of talent which given the right direction and coaching will be see in Blue and maybe Green and Gold in the near future. Ammon Matuautu, Gary Neugebauer and Oli Hoskins spent the last 6 weeks training with the full Force squad and reports from the coaches were full of praise considering these are still teenagers and both Garry and Oli are props. The more that the locally grown lads get exposed to the expected level of professional rugby the better for the future of the game. Lets hope we can keep them once the academy closes at the end of the season.

Talk is that it will now be centralised in Canberra and Sydney with a draft system in place which means that local talent could be lost to the East again.

I despair when I see how much talent has disapeared over the years. I think these guys get burned out. A teenager with stars in his eyes has a physical programme, diet and strict regime that is a huge burden. Give these guys a break, let them have some youth and fun, their talent is part of their DNA. Let's compare Bam Bam, and Rabbit with Poido and Campo. In the beginning Poido and Campo were amateurs, held down jobs, trained outside work hours, had a few beers, ate a bit of chocolate, stayed up late at night a few nights here and there.

Bam Bam and Rabbit probably train 3 times as much as did Poido and Campo, go to Gym probably twice as much and so on...

Would you say they are 3 times or even twice as good/talented rugby players than Poido and Campo?

If the teenagers were allowed to be teens and given a heap of time off Rugby so they did not get burned out, would they deteriorate so far to be totally out of consideration?

Totally agree especially when you look at chaps like Will Brock and Zack Holmes - over training has lead to massive injuries that ruined Will's chances for a Force contract and Zack at 21 has yet to have a single season without injury. The pressure put on these "kids" is immense and with so many people pushing them too early, only very very few resilient ones have a chance. Pocock, O'Connor, Beal and Cooper are exceptions to the rule.

Let the boys enjoy Rugby and experience the fun of the game prior to filling their heads will $$$$$$ and promises of glory as they all develop at different rates. These kids are told that if you are not on the radar by 15 you should forget it - if you dont make the Aus schoolboys team you are no hope of going pro.... too much pressure for some and though some thrive, how much talent has been lost to the game by U18 burn out?
