The important break is at under 9's, Under 8's play Walla rugby, no tackling, have some fun, run, pass etc. He wouldn't notice any difference between himself and an under 6 at this level. Under 9's play Mini rugby which is tackle, uncontested set-piece, pretty much under 8's with tackling.

If transport is an issue, all junior rugby generally takes place at one of three nominated venues until U/11s

Your local club might be one of the ones which has a long drive every saturday to play, and it might work out better to pick a different club....I don't know if that ever happens, but it's somethign you might want to keep in mind.

Southern zone (generally) plays at Thomas oval in Kwinana, Central at Britannia in Leederville and northern (I have no clue, never been there)

from 11's up all games are at Britannia.

That's all I know, apart from if he's keen, whilst there's no tackling, get him involved, he won't get hurt by bigger kids and he can play a couple of years in 6's before going up anyway (He'll be 6 this year anyway right)

There's also a bit of crossover at times as well. Rocko played a game or two at Britannia each season, and some of the Brit teams played at Thomas every now and again.

There was also the 'home carnivals' which were awesome, all sorts of clubs would turn up to a club's home ground from all over and have a game or two.......good fun!

My little guy attended his first training session last night and is now a fully paid up member of our local club.

He's the one with his hand up - asking questions of the coach, that's a good start.

    And so the journey begins...

You'll have a blast WF1964........those cold 8am starts at Thomas are a delight.

The coffee van gets a queue early, take cash and don't be afraid to use your elbows.

Hope he has a great time and winds up wearing green and gold!

    Me too!

I only hope I don't turn into one of those ugly parents who behave badly at kids' sports events.

A chardonnay on the sideline (?correct terminology) will do me fine.

We had a cracker of an U8's game this morning with just about every kid on the park scoring tries.. Roo-dogs were well drilled and had an interesting tactic whereby they all stood in a line one behind the other and as soon as the front one got tagged he'd pass to the next & so on... (not the most exciting way to play but i dare say effective)

It was a bit like the Bulls vs Blues (in terms of style of play) they bashed it up the middle whereas we spread it wide and out galloped them.. nothing in it at the end. Proud of my boys, they showed they can mix it up and the rest of the season looks good.

i was puffed by the end of it, hoarse and sweating like a pig.
