    Introduction and a Question

    Hi guys,

I've been a Force member since we started now, and the thought of playing union locally has been nipping at me for a couple of years now, but I'm yet to make up my mind and not sure how to go about it, and also about what role I'd fit into.

I have the opportunity to play the next couple of seasons, am 25, 90 kg and 1.8m, and have never played a contact sport in my life. Any idea how I should start getting fit, finding a team (am in Port Kennedy), and any way to ease myself into it?

Gday Maelkann whilst the suggestions from the guys are all correct perhaps a read of a series of articles written by one of our members here may also be an idea.

So I grabbed my copy of An Idiot's Guide To Rugby - Rockingham Edition and my Western Force Rugby Ball, headed down to have a chat tonight. So far, yes, they'll have me, I need a mouthguard and boots, membership is $250 and I'll probably slot into the backs since there are fewer backs than virgins in a... pub.

Slightly anxious, but hey, it's a start.

So, I've been training for about five/six weeks now, my skills aren't that much better, and I've gotten about 12 minutes of game time.

(It being only 30 each way, plus two weeks of byes really didn't help!)

I'm beginning to get more of a grasp on the game, though kind of wish I got some more practice on the really really really basic things (like catching an odd shaped ball consistently).

Though we're at home this weekend so hopefully I get a run again, at least through enthusiasm if not skills!

Ask your coach for some extra training, one-to-one.

Topping the session off with a bit of live scrummaging should go down a treat with the bowlers too.

Agree with you on the basic things - when I started playing touch rugby, we did alot of practice on defence and attack, but the main thing I needed to know was how to pass and catch the ball as I'd never actually played any form of AFL or rugby before! Best thing is to get out on the weekend with a mate and just pass the ball back and forth for practice.
After 3 years, I think I'm getting the hang of it now!

This really looks more like a quetion for this thread http://http://twf.com.au/showthread.php?t=26297 However I'll add some advice. Firstly disregard everything you've already read here. I'd probably start hanging around your local highschool and see if any kids will have a bit of a mess around game with you, that said I see you're a measly 90kg so you may want to stick with the year 8's. Try and smash them to make yourself feel like a big man. Then get yourself a good lifting program and up your protein intake 500% you really want to be eating around 6000gm of protein per day.
When you've added a little muscle mass head down to rocko in your VL and Realise your potential. Another thing stop waisting your time on the internet asking for advice from a bunch of morons who've never played the game nor satisfied a woman just by showing them there flared lats and perfect calves.
