Danny Corcoran has resigned after a six-year stint as chief executive of Athletics Australia to join new Super Rugby franchise Melbourne Rebels.

The Rebels join an expanded Super 15 competition in 2011 and Corcoran will be their inaugural general manager of rugby operations.

He held similar posts at AFL clubs Essendon and Melbourne before joining AA in 2004.
Corcoran becomes the second senior sports administrator to jump codes and join the Rebels.

Brian Waldron was poached from NRL outfit Melbourne Storm to be their first CEO.

The Rebels have not taken the same route as the RugbyWA - parachuting their first two CEO's in from the Rugby states.
Similar to Corcoran, Brian Waldron had a long career in sports admin with Richmond and St Kilda before joining the Storm in 2004.
They might not be part of the rugby old boys network (that's what Mortlock & McQueen bring) but they probably have contacts with the Melbourne establishment. Maybe that's what Vern Reid brings to the Force. It might be more beneficial in the long run.

a pretty good appointment, comparitively speaking rugby union was a lot slower to embrace professionalism and as a result doesnt have the quality administrators that the other codes have. Whilst Waldrom and Corcoran might not fully understand the workings of the rugby union fraternity, the do understand the Melbourne sporting world, which can be beneficial when it comes to addressing corporate support, sponsorship and the Melbourne people in general.
