Joining the Maul

Watching the replay of the game I noticed that Sharpie was picked up for joining the maul when he was not a part of the shortened line out.

Is this what he was penalised for?

Is this a real rule?

Is it a new rule?

Is the Ref an idiot?

Been watching rugby for 30 years and never hearded anything like this.

yeah, i think he was part of the backs, ie 10m back, as the maul hadn't moved off the line, he ended up joining it offside. not sure what the actual law is, but i tihhnk there was an infringement in it.

Yes you must nominate the number to the line out and anyone not in the line must be 10 mtres back from the line and only the Half can join the maul untill the maul moves forward
Thats why you see sharlpie play half back alot so he can join the maul and the ref asking is he half or in the line

Sharpie looked like he was casually strolling back to the play, saw a maul had formed and jumped in. All good except he wasn't part of the lineout and although he joined from an onside position the whole of the maul hadn't moved beyond the line of touch so he was unable to join the maul.

Once the whole ruck or maul that has formed moves beyond the line of touch anyone can join as the lineout is deemed to have ended.

A player with the ball leaves the lineout.
The ball is thrown beyond thelast man in the lineout.

Pretty much spot on WRF.

Remember he was still retiring (ie from the Tahs side) when the l/o formed and the ball was thrown. His only option to remain legal was to keep retiring to the 10m mark before then coming in to join once the l/o was over (ie the maul had moved off the line of touch)

not really, he was offside, if it was a back joining before they were alowed, it would have been more obvious. but since it was sharpie, it is hard to understand.
