Super14 cost NZRU millions in lost revenue

The 2009 Super14 cost the New Zealand Rugby Union and their five Super Rugby franchises a whopping NZ $7 million last year.

According to a report in the Sunday News, New Zealand's top tournament is putting a massive dent in NZRU's bank accounts and shows how much trouble rugby has been in New Zealand.

The Super 14 brought in $32,896,000 last year but the outgoings were $40,177,000 - a deficit of $7,281,000.

OK. Now add to that the losses incurred in running the NPC. Then take away from what the All Black brand generates every year and the difference is what the three combined and complementing each other are worth. Would the final result be the same without all the inputs?

They are either cooking the books or grossly overpaying their players - if $17,381,000 is supposedly the wages bill after removing the All Blacks portion for 140 players, that means the average is $125k.

If I was a cynical man, I'd wonder whether the NZRU was perhaps imposting costs associated with the All Blacks onto Super rugby/the ANZ Cup, keeping expectations low and maximising the apparent earnings of the ABs which, oh yeah, are theirs to do with as they wish without anyone whinging about what is "fair" or "reasonable"....

I guess with a 7 million dollar annual loss, the NZRU will be canning the Super 14 immediately!

If they are in that bad a way how in hell did they get the RWC? ....suspect a certain amount of BS is involved. However, a few concerns; firstly, the appearance of lack of attendance at super games in NZ, secondly, the constant feedback from kiwis that the accomodation for 2011 RWC is a fiasco, thirstly, kiwis are organising it!

There is no doubt Super Rugby in NZ is in a bad way. The Crusaders can't fill a brand new grandstand with anything but kids on free tickets and the membership is only about NZ$160. However Canterbury get planty to an ANZC match.

So how is that necessarily bad? The money from Super rugby comes from television, while for the ANZC it is tickets. Maybe they have simply got the best outcome, assuming Super attendance would be at the expense of ANZC attendance.
