Peter Cundall arrested at pulp mill protest

    Story Added : 19th November 2009

ABC gardening personality Peter Cundall has been arrested outside Tasmania's parliament during a protest against Gunns' Tamar Valley pulp mill.

Mr Cundall was among several dozen activists at the protest organised by the group, 'Pulp the Mill'.

The 82-year-old says told the crowd he has never been arrested but was willing to make a stand.

He was arrested after refusing police requests to move from parliament's front steps.

He was asked: "Did you hear the direction before?"

He replied: " I did hear it."

"Are you refusing to leave now?"

"I'm afraid so, I do respect the law but I'm so sorry but I will be refusing to leave.

"OK. Then you realise that if you refuse to leave you can be arrested.

    "I understand that.

    "OK, I'm now arresting you."

Several other protesters have also been taken away by police.

Peter was head of the Tas Communist Party at one stage.
A very interesting man who has lead an amazing life.
Good on him for sticking up for what he believes in.

For the sake of argument, most.
There are some variations to the sentiment but there are generally more productive ways of chanelling your energies to influence an outcome.

There may be "more productive ways of chanelling your energies to influence an outcome", but I can think of none more civilised than politely refusing a direction to move on.

As to its effectiveness it seems very much in the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi who foiled the might of Great Britain and won independence for his country by his strategy of civil disobedience.

These kids might disagree with that sentiment...

Solely because of the protest, not a single other driver?

In this case yes - he was politically isolated.

    Nice straw man arguement.

I'm sure Prez Soeharto would have given up the whole "Korupsi, Kolusi dan Nepotisme" thing becasue it was "so very 1997" after all....

At a much less politically sensitive level... how many people here attended the S14 for Perth rally? Was it just to fill in an otherwise empty dayplanner, or an attempt to influence an outcome?

I didn't realise I was protesting anything by being at Subiaco, I thought I was showing support for something that might happen.
There is a difference without even splitting hairs.
