Thumbs up Gregan congratulated on Hall of Fame induction

    Friday, 9 October 2009

Australian Rugby Union and Brumbies Rugby have offered their warm congratulations to former CA Brumbies and Wallabies captain George Gregan following his induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

The most-capped international in Rugby history with 139 Tests, including 59 as captain, Gregan was included as a Hall of Fame member at last night’s 25th anniversary induction in Melbourne.

Others inducted on the night were Shane Warne (cricket), Luc Longley (basketball), Liz Ellis (netball), Peter Montgomery (water polo), Michael Doohan (motorcycle racing), Kevin Sheedy (AFL) and Simon Fairweather (archery).

Gregan made his debut as Test halfback in 1994 against Italy in Brisbane.

He played his final Test for the Wallabies in the World Cup quarter final loss to England in Marseilles in 2007.

Until August this year – when passed by Springboks skipper John Smit – Gregan also held with former England captain Will Carling the record as the most-capped leader in Test Rugby.

“George made a sterling contribution to the game in Australia and his recognition from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame board is well-deserved,” said ARU Managing Director and CEO John O’Neill.

“His career longevity is reflected in his 139-Test tally, well clear of any other player in the game.”

Quality Halfback he was. All the atributes needed, plus he thought he'd help the referee to do his job as all good halfbacks do. His battles with the other big mouth Justin Marshall were excellent to watch.

Well deserved and can easily hold his head high in such illustrious company.

Nice to see a good Scotch boy (Longley) being recognised and especially pleased for Liz Ellis, an excellent example of everything a captain and champion should be.

"In uncertain times, it makes sense to have as many strings to your bow as a well-provisioned fiddler or a prudent toxophilite."

For a second there I thought you must have been refering to Warney...
