hard... Phil Mooney looks likes a good man.... I wish him the best... It wasn't an easy task to take on being Reds coach...
Indeed, and it will be interesting to see how much enthusiasm they scare up from the potential replacements when the team is crap, they have a long history of sacking the coach and the entire management structure is in turmoil and undefined.
Maybe David Nucifora should take the job.

This is nonsense. The team is far from crap - they are very talented - but young. That's the point - they are at, or very near a point where it will click in a big way - thanks to Phil Mooney developing and holding very good young Queensland talent over the past two years.
He deserved to be rewarded for this, and for re-building spirit in the team.
As for the management structure being in turmoil - everyone is gone - its a completely new broom. This part of the story is good, as all the old dead wood in the administration is gone.
My tip - Link will coach and he will bring Gasnier with him.
I hope the Reds management know what they are doing. There is an old rule to coaches that goes "Never sack someone unless you've already sorted the replacement". The Tahs forgot that one when they dissed McKenzie. I hope they've got someone good lined up.

had he coached next year and finished anywhere below 10th, then there would have been speculation about his job anyway.
the more i think about it, the more i agree that this was the right decision...
Mooney has had 2 years to build a culture that players want to play in, in that time we have lost McMenimen, Barnes, Moore and gained no one.
Mooney looks like a real nice guy and i feel sorry that this had to happen, but maybe he was just to nice and couldnt get the best out of his players, maybe his better suited to been a skills or backs coach.
The point is that the next 12months are critically important, having someone who is a lot more experienced in the position will be better off at the end of the day.
Tim Horan and Dan Crowley were involved in the consultancy and final decision, they know more about the inner working of the Reds better then anyone.

Williams hasn't signed, McCall halted the negotiations until the coaching position is sorted

Yeah, I'm with you on both your posts TOCC, I believe it was a decision that had to be made.
There is no doubting the man's character or loyalty but unfortunately the Reds need more than that at the moment.

Noticed Andy Friend on that list with Quins......he might be out of a job shortly!
C'mon the
Brian Smith would be a great option if available it'd leave things open for Jimmy Williams to come in too.

Perhaps, but I was writing as it would appear to an outsider considering the position. By all measures, the team ATM is crap. There may be potential, but they have put little on the board as a marker, they've lost probably their best player, and miracles will clearly be expected from any applicant.
They've all been sacked so it will be an entirely new and untested team once appointed - I would have thought that could serve as the definition of a management group in turmoil.
Their position on the table is crap, but it doesn't make it a crap team. They are the youngest team in super rugby.
Just out of interest, who of the following would you describe as crap?
Horwill
Hardman
Holmes
Higginbotham
Van Humphries
Braid
Genia
Cooper
Ioane
Hynes
etc.
I am curious.
On 2009>>>>> Hardman, Holmes, Van Humphries, Higginbotham, Cooper all inconsistent efforts...
Tic... who in your player group choice over achieved in 2009?
True - but that doesn't make them crap.
In 2009, Ioane was outstanding, as was Genia.
If you want to be blunt about it, both Barnes and McMeniman had a very ordinary 2009 as well, so you could argue that their departure isn't earth shattering.
if Barnes and McMenimen were 'very ordinary' then the rest of the reds were craptastic, Ioane been the obvious exemption.
