Eddie Jones says Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne is 'worth $1m in rugby'

Eddie Jones says Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne is 'worth $1m in rugby'

By Brent Read and Stuart Honeysett

    August 25, 2009

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has predicted Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne could command more than $1 million a season in European rugby union.

Jones's comments came amid speculation on Monday night that Hayne was about to be the subject of a massive offer from the Australian Rugby Union.

A Sydney radio station reported that the ARU would offer Hayne a multi-million-dollar contract to switch to rugby.

Hayne, off contract at the end of next season, has suspended talks with Parramatta until the end of the season. However, the Eels have already approached the NRL for guidance as they look to fend off any interest from rugby.

While there is a sense Australian rugby has become hesitant over the recruitment of rugby league players following the well-documented problems with Wendell Sailor and more recently Lote Tuqiri, Hayne would be an ideal fit for any of the domestic Super 14 teams.

He also shapes as an attractive option for European rugby - former league internationals Sonny Bill Williams and Craig Gower have become stars in France - given he could travel on a Fijian passport, which would allow him to be a 'local' there.

Although he has seen little of Hayne this year, Jones suggested he could see the Eels fullback becoming a superstar in the 15-man game.

"He's an outstanding player," Jones said. "He can score a try. One of his big advantages is he is quite a big guy and he's got pace. In rugby you need to have big wingers so you can carry the ball through contact.

He would be a better convert than Tahu. But he is only worth that much in france, we are not short of fullbacks or wingers at the moment.

Jones did say Europe so it's probably an accurate opinion.

I read on the Daily Telegraphs website yesterday that he hasn't signed yet but that was the deal that would be tabled as he has put off a new deal until after the season

Blimey. Thought Eddie and his ilk would have learnt by now not to make such outlandish statements..obviously not (and it keeps him in the news).

The 13 man game has no skill he said, union kicks are for countries that play union and test rugby kills test league, but the NRL competition more entertaining to watch and follow than union and no skill pfft then union always out for league s best

He had the athleticism and skill-set to compete in the NFL, I think he did okay for a first season at the highest level without any background in the game before. If learns how to adjust his change-of-pace and overcomes his jitters, he can give himself a chance of more regular season game time if he stays on. I'm sure if the 49ers cut him, someone else will pick him up. I'm a little flummoxed as to why he's giving it up, he's already achieved more than a lot of college players who played their whole lives have achieved, simply by making the cut in the first place. His ability is there, the coaches can see it and most of his first-season problems were elementary mistakes of his own doing, he'd have made the same mistakes if he debuted in the CFL or the NCAA, it wasn't that the standard was too high for him. I also don't see any shame in being a star player on the special teams unit either.
