Wallabies to abandon traditional running game: Jones

    August 15, 2003

Australia coach Eddie Jones said the Wallabies would have to abandon their traditional running game if they wanted to beat New Zealand in Saturday's Tri-nations match at Eden Park.

Australia's success against New Zealand in recent years has been built around keeping the ball in hand, but Jones says they plan to kick the ball more this weekend.

"We've done a lot of kicking practice and we feel like we're progressing," Jones told a news conference on Friday.

"It's not our natural style of playing the game but we have to learn to kick the ball judiciously."

Jones said Australia were forced to review their strategy after being crushed by New Zealand 50-21 in Sydney last month.

The Wallabies tried to run the All Blacks around by keeping the ball in play at all times, but their tactics backfired as the New Zealand backs fully exploited their pace and skill to pile on seven tries in their record win.

England beat New Zealand in June by sticking to a safety-first game based on kicking and South Africa only went down 19-11 last weekend when they employed similar tactics.

Jones said that was clearly the way to go.

"I think South Africa showed that if you kick in certain situations you can minimise the effectiveness of the All Blacks," Jones said.

"They very played smart football, they were very spirited and it was a tremendous display by them.

"They played like South Africa do and they identified some areas they felt they could pressure New Zealand and did that exceptionally well."

Australia captain George Gregan said the world champions, who rebounded from their record loss in Sydney by beating the Springboks 29-9 in Brisbane a fortnight ago, were quietly confident of springing an upset over the All Blacks.

"You never want to be part of a loss, especially a heavy loss but sport's like that but it's cyclical," Gregan said.

"You go through your ups and downs and it's important you don't stay in the trough for so long.

"We're aiming to move back up and I think we took some steps in that direction in our last performance against South Africa but it's a matter of maintaining that positive momentum."

A six year old article? Shows nothing changes in rugby - especially if you abandon the ELVs.
