Qantas Wallabies Touring Squad for South Africa Named

    July 29, 2009 - 10:32am
    Story by: ARU

Winger Peter Hynes and prop Pek Cowan are the additions to the last Qantas Wallabies match night squad of 22, for this week’s trip to South Africa for the Bundaberg Rum Tri Nations Test at Cape Town on 8 August.

Hynes travelled as the 23rd man during Australia’s 16-22 loss to New Zealand in Auckland last week, while Cowan has maintained his match fitness over recent weeks playing for Warringah in the New South Wales Shute Shield club competition.

The pair both had their most recent outings for the Wallabies during the 34-12 win over Italy at Melbourne last month.

The selection of four props gives the Qantas Wallabies crucial cover in this area in the advent of any training ground injuries prior to the match. The presence of Hynes offers a further backline option after Australia fielded a five-forward, two-back, split on its substitutes list during the Tri Nations opener in New Zealand.

Coaches Robbie Deans and Jim Williams will name their Test line-up for the match, tomorrow week.

The Qantas Wallabies depart for South Africa on Friday morning, relocating to Cape Town, where they will be based in the lead-up to next weekend’s match at Newlands. The team will arrive in Cape Town late on Friday night (South African time).

The Springboks play the All Blacks in the third match of this year’s Bundaberg Rum Tri Nations series at Durban on Saturday.

The Qantas Wallabies touring squad of 24 is: Adam Ashley-Cooper, James O’Connor, Drew Mitchell, Peter Hynes, Lachie Turner, Stirling Mortlock (captain), Berrick Barnes, Matt Giteau, Luke Burgess, Will Genia, Wycliff Palu, Richard Brown, George Smith, David Pocock, Phil Waugh, Dean Mumm, James Horwill, Nathan Sharpe, Ben Alexander, Pek Cowan, Al Baxter, Benn Robinson, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Stephen Moore.

To be fair to Hodgeo he isn't really that match fit. Hopefully he'll get his chance on the way back.

Good to see Pek on the tour. Hope he'll get a game (even off the bench) but if not just going on the tour should be a good learning experience.
