TEAM OF THE WEEK

Tom Watson. At the age of 59, 26 years after his last victory in a major, came within one wayward shot of winning the British Open!

Stewart Cink. The New York Times got it right with its headline: THE MAN WHO SHOT SANTA CLAUS. He fully deserved his victory in the British Open, but what a pity he had to beat Tom Watson to do it!

England cricket team. Take a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series after dusting Australia in the second Test, at Lord's. It was England's first victory over the Australians at that venue in 75 years.

Timana Tahu and Craig Wing. This week passed each other going opposite ways at Checkpoint Charlie, which separates rugby union and rugby league.

West Indies cricket team. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The West Indies lost a home Test series to Bangladesh.

St Kilda. Sixteen games played so far this year for 16 wins. A rendezvous with destiny this season or an appointment with disappointment? I suspect the former.

Tiger Woods. Missed the British Open cut - only the second cut he has missed at a major since turning professional.

SBS. Terrific Ashes coverage. First class. Different. Refreshing. Strong.

Eden Park. The hoodoo strikes again! Either that or it was the bloody All Blacks goal-kicker.

Newport Breakers rugby team of 1999. Ah, sing it with me: "There's a track winding back, past an oval, to a shack, down at Newport, NSW/ Where the rugby is finer, the forwards are tighter, the backs are hard as nails." The only Newport team to win the Kentwell Cup is gathering this arvo to support the current team. Friends and supporters are invited. Meanwhile, the mighty Campbelltown Harlequins are also having a "Get back to Campbelltown day" next Saturday. All welcome.
