John O'Neill says ARU won't tender for 2015 or 2019 rugby World Cups

    By Darren Walton

    May 06, 2009 .

The Australian Rugby Union has confirmed it will not bid to host the 2015 or 2019 Rugby World Cup tournaments.

Despite the enormous success of the 2003 World Cup in Australia, and the desire to bring the game's showpiece event back, the ARU baulked at the asking price to host the tournament.

The IRB is seeking an $A162.35 million guarantee from the host nation for the 2015 event and $A194.82 million for 2019.

The host nation also has to bear all the tournament's cost, relying solely on ticket sales for revenue.

England announced its bid to stage the 2015 World Cup on Tuesday with South Africa expected to announce it will bid for either 2015 or 2019 on Thursday.

Wales will also be part of England's bid to stage the event and they join Japan in the race to stage rugby's biggest international competition.

The IRB will announce the tournament hosts for 2015 and 2019 in July.

The ARU said it was is unable to provide the guarantees necessary in full and without compromise.

"Rather than submit a tender that would be ruled ineligible, ARU has reluctantly decided to withdraw from the tender process for both tournaments," it said in a statement.

"ARU is extremely disappointed but the risk associated with underwriting guarantees for tournaments six and 10 years into the future would not be in the best interests of Australian rugby.

"Risk factors include fluctuating exchange rates and the uncertainty and unpredictability of the world economy."

I will assume that the link in the first post is still good
