Brumbies after O'Connor as Mitchell leans to Reds

    Bret Harris | March 27, 2009

    Article from: The Australian

THE Brumbies will intensify their efforts to recruit teenage sensation James O'Connor from the Western Force amid speculation his Perth teammate Drew Mitchell is leaning towards going home to the Queensland Reds.

It was originally believed that Mitchell would follow his close friend Matt Giteau from Perth to Canberra.

But the Brumbies appear to be out of the running because of a lack of third-party sponsorship.

"We are not pushing it hard," Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan said. "We're not confident he (Mitchell) will head our way.

"We'll continue to look at other options.

"James O'Connor is a good option. We will look at options within our own squad and we will look internationally as well."

The Force has made O'Connor its number one priority following Giteau's decision to leave.

But the prospect of Giteau running the Brumbies' backline could possibly persuade O'Connor to join him in Canberra. He could play either inside centre or fullback at the Brumbies.

The Waratahs have also expressed interest in O'Connor, although Mitchell is their main target.

It is highly unlikely Mitchell would remain at the Force, despite lucrative third-party sponsorship opportunities in Perth.

Mitchell is expected to attract the same level of corporate support in Brisbane and Sydney as he would in Perth.

He was meant to make a decision by today, but is taking more time to mull it over.
Indications are that Mitchell is seriously considering a move back to Brisbane, where he is spending the Force's bye week with his parents.

Mitchell's main attractions in Brisbane are being with family and friends and playing for a young and ambitious Reds team that appears to be on the rise.

He spent three years with an unsuccessful Queensland team before joining the Force, but the Reds are a much better side under coach Phil Mooney than the one that Mitchell left in 2007.

And the Reds play an exciting brand of expansive rugby that would suit Mitchell's attacking brilliance. There has been talk that Mitchell would baulk at moving back to Queensland because the Reds have committed to rugby league convert Mark McLinden for two years. But apparently that would not be an obstacle to him returning.

Mitchell would be virtually guaranteed his preferred fullback position at the Waratahs, whose current number 15, Sam Norton-Knight, is leaving to join Cardiff Blues in Wales at the end of the season.

On other player movement news, Force backrower Tamaiti Horua is expected to join Irish province Ulster, which is coached by former Waratahs mentor Matt Williams.

Meanwhile, the Brumbies are facing the daunting task of playing the Sharks in front of a capacity crowd of 54,000 at Absa Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

The Sharks have produced a formidable record at home, having won 19 of 22 games at the "Shark Tank" since 2006 and seven in a row since the 2007 final.

They have also won five of their six games against the Brumbies in Durban, although the ACT side caused a boilover on their last visit two years ago.
"It will be rocking," Brumbies coach Andy Friend said. "But that can work in your favour too.

"If we can keep the crowd silent, we will know we are on track."

I think the ARU will need to relax its foreign player policy a bit further to cater for player movement otherwise we could end up in the same position as the reds a few seasons back if all our good players start packing their bags.
Especially if they hope to build a new team in Melbourne.
Where we can ,we should build using the players we have, but if there are any weaknesses that cant be filled then there should be flexibility to bring in whoever we need to.

So far we have lost McIsaac,Gits, most likely Drew and stanners. And now Horua and possibly JOC.Thats 6 out of the 17 that have yet to resign.

Mitch Hardy is going to be a busy man.

The way things are going with the WF I think your right. But the question is can we pay for the better players? We certainly cant pay as much as many of the Southern Hemisphere players are receiving in France and the UK. We could probably get some SA players but I fear we would only be able to pick up has been's and fringe (journey men) players.
Maybe its time to fast track some of our academy and WA players into the playing squad! They would be thrown into the deep end and may struggle for a season or two but I bet they would play with pride and all their heart!

The biggest problem is we dont have a comp that can prepare these guys for the next level, that is where the arc was helpful.

We could also scout the NPC and Currie Cup for up and coming talent who would jump and the chance to play S14 and would be good longer term prospects.

You are so right! The ARU may have turned around their loss but they haven't done anything for that tier of rugby! Which seems to be very shortsighted to me.
Just an after thought, but if the S14 is expanded with home and away fixtures would this increase the size of the squads? Were will all these players be coming from?
TOCC the Firepower issue is over nothing can be done for what has happened in the past. Are you waiting for an apology? WA rugby just has to get on with it the same as many other investors!

please, RugbyWA dug there own grave on this one, there is no one to blame but RugbyWA. No one forced RugbWA to get into bed with Firepower, no one but RugbyWA is to blame to the ill-discipline or players dessent in the team.

the Force have had sufficient time to implement retention and succesion procedures, if they havent worked sufficiently, then thats no ones fault but the Force's.

For every one of them that leaves there are two who want a shot. Maybe Rugby WA will learn from this and give them a chance rather than trying to buy instant success. The diehards will support them whatever and, if the MES move is enough to sustain the franchise, they can try to build like Queensland have done.

At the moment the attempts to buy success are looking like they have backfired.

I could be wrong but did this same online newspaper "The Australian" not publish an article yesterday or a day or two ago that claimed Drew was going to NSW?

    ---------- Post added at 10:18 ---------- Previous post was at 10:15 ----------

In the meantime we are sitting off the pace in the recruitment stakes:

    Re-signed: 1: Matt Hodgson

Confirmed Leaving: 2 : Matt Giteau, Ben Castle

    Gains: 0:

Not looking good is it (NO I AM NOT FARKING TROLLING).

The best bet for the Force is to start looking at fringe NZ guys, as sure as houses the ARU will have to be flexible on the foreign players or else the Force will simply be unable to put a team on the paddock.

Sure the diehards will still be there at MES, but it is the non diehards that leave at half time when we are getting yet again another flogging at home that are the worry, they simply wont come back. So basically you will have the situation where MES will not even be full. Anyone heard of the Western Reds before?

Melbourne is ready to pounce BTW....
