We'll have a team, quality unknown until some backs turn up to training.

If they have an under 18 colts division we've got the numbers to field a team there I think.

Uni should be fine, and Kala will probably win this year with the talent they've got.

Nedlands rarely do well at sevens, Cott and Soaks are likely to be competitive as they usually are.

Wanneroo have an astute sevens coach in Elwee Prinsloo.

    Everyone else will be struggling.

But that's just my useless opinion, and only 'cause you asked, Pieter.

what I have heard so far is that there will be 8 U/18 teams 8 U/20 teams and 18 open teams. Kick off is around 11 in the morning and it goes right through to seven in the evening when the finals will be played under lights if needed.

I went to see our sevens (well, five, actually) having a team run today at Tompkins.

All I can say is, that whatever the prize money, Kalamunda can start spending it right away.

Uni may be the dark horse, they have at least four experienced sevens backs, and have a healthy contingent of new fast forwards to select select from.

Cottesloe, according to our spy, have a couple of dozen new neanderthals, most huge, aggresive and capable, but I doubt that will translate well in sevens, although it will stand them well in the season proper.

Nedlands may have some problems, with only fifty or so at training over all grades, but then sevens is not their strong suite, although they have some capable backs.

Associates are in hiding at the SAS barracks, but with only 40 or so cars in their parking areas the other night numbers can't be that strong. Losing their assistant second grade coach from last year may also cost them a good backline player or two.

Perth think they are in with a good chance, but they are mistaking quantity for quality, and their five or so potential teams in the tournament will be battling for the wooden spoon with Palmyra's token effort.

I have no futher inside knowledge about the other clubs than what I posted before, so maybe some one else can fill us in.

Well, the State Sevens are on again this Saturday at Perth-Morley, but you wouldn't know about it from the publicity they are getting.

Any chance of a book being run here?

Mind you it would be hard, from the lack of information available as to who is taking part.

If I knew all the above, Coach, I wouldn't be asking.

All I know is that it is on this Saturday, from 11am onwards until approx 7.30 pm ,at Perth Rugby Club's home ground off Walter Road Morley near Gallaria shopping centre.

It used to be called the Tooheys Sevens and probably still is. While it is run officially by RugbyWA, Perth Rugby club make a killing over the bar and canteens, and good luck to them, they are the only club whose grounds are available on Saturdays during the cricket season.

A few years ago there were cash prizes of several thousand dollars for the winners but all they've offered in recent years is a few cartons of beer. So now it's all about prestige and having a look at what the clubs have got in new and retained players.

It also gives clubs an opportunity to poach players from other clubs early on, because these days clubs who have been bitten don't submit their new player registrations until the last minute to prevent their player lists and addresses falling into the hands of other clubs before the season starts.

It was fun though, to lodge a false early registration of a well known recently retired quality rep player from NZ, put your own phone number and address on it, and watch the hierarchy of clubs who never poach ringing your number or knocking on your door within hours of registration, but that's another story....

All in all the sevens is a good day's rugby and an opportunity to catch up with members and old mates from other clubs that you don't always have time to have a beer with during the season proper because of club commitments.

I couldn't suggest any odds on who will win, I don't know who's involved and what they've recruited, except that my first bet would be on Kalamunda 1 followed by my second bet on Kalamunda 2.
