EMIRATES WESTERN FORCE TO ASSIST VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE VICTIMS

EMIRATES WESTERN FORCE TO ASSIST VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE VICTIMS

The Emirates Western Force will join with the Australian Rugby Union and fellow Australian provinces in collecting money for the Victorian bushfire victims during round one of the Investec Super 14.

RugbyWA CEO Greg Harris spoke with ARU Managing Director and CEO John O’Neill today to discuss ways in which rugby could help those caught in the tragedy.

Volunteers will be positioned around Subiaco Oval on Friday night at the WA side’s fixture with the Blues.

Harris said the devastation in Victoria was beyond description.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Victoria who have suffered in this tragic occurrence. It is only appropriate that we do what we can to assist, starting with a collection at the game on Friday,” said Harris.

“What the people in those areas are going through is just unthinkable.”

O’Neill echoed those sentiments, saying the nation was shocked and numbed by what has happened.

“The victims and their families will need ongoing support and I’m sure the Rugby community will want to lend its assistance at each of our Super 14 venues by contributing to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal,” said O’Neill.

“We are aware of other initiatives under consideration at various levels of our game while ARU will also look to other avenues for supporting the Bushfire Appeal as the season continues.”

All proceeds from Friday night’s collection will go to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal, launched by Victorian Premier John Brumby in partnership with Red Cross and the Federal Government.

Also do all your grocery shopping for the next month at Coles on Friday 13th. All profits from the day will go to the victims of the bushfires.

A kick in this game is like a rather nasty alcoholic shooter, only as good as it's chaser...

...in related news, I got this in my email at work today:

    Hello family, friends and colleagues

A close friend of mine is supporting an initiative of Father Brian who is collecting clothes, shoes, linen etc for families left homeless and without possessions as a result of the atrocious fires in Victoria.

This was her note to me:

    Dear all,

I have just been in touch with Father Brian re helping our fellow Australians in need. He is COMPLETELY out of stocks of everything having just sent a plane load off to the flood victims in Queensland. He URGENTLY needs anything surplus in the way of clothing for babes – adults and all sizes, bedding too, tea towels, ordinary towels, anything like that you can think of. (not furniture of course) I have two coats which I no longer wear – clean too – and it will be cold there soon, so cardigans etc will be welcome. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have nothing except what one is wearing. Shoes and slippers etc.

PLEASE let me have anything that you have surplus in your wardrobes, closets, chests of drawers and linen cupboards and also some boxes to pack them in. Father Brian can get them sent free and will get them sent over to Victoria to help clothe the victims ASAP.

Thanks for reading this and in anticipation

    June

If you want to drop anything off to my home you are welcome or you can deliver direct to 18 Colin Street, West Perth (rear of the building) until Wednesday. Alternatively, you can call Crisis Care on 9481 4050 or I can give you Father Brian’s mobile phone number if you want to make some other arrangements. If you would like to drop anything at my home, please give me a call on 0419 145 366.

I hope together we can make a difference to the lives of those suffering in Victoria. THANK YOU!

PS: Please feel free to pass this email on to your friends and family to enlist their support too!

Bummer it isn't when I need to hit the shops, that is always a months food shopping in one hit in case I don't get back for a month.

I understand Woolies are doing something similar but not sure of the details.
Ideally that would be a different date so not just a "me too" action.
