The problem with the coffee shop boy and his player power inspired auto selection was that he stayed too long. His poor habits were mimicked by every Australian halfback for 15 years. It'll be a decade before we produce a half that will have a crack. The best half I have ever seen was the great Joost vun der westhausen (sp?). In his early career he was deadly behind a massive pack. He wrought havoc on opposition defences and created space for his backs due to the attention he attracted. Coffee shop boy was a good organiser. I like halfbacks that will rip open a defence

How about some running rugby from the attack coach?

Cordingly was an inventive halfback and a good stealer of yards who didn't suffer from the two step disease - alas he played in the time of the untouchable Gregan. Such is life.

I agree that Gregan stayed too long - anout 5 years in my book. Still we have some bright young talent in Australia on the way. All is not lost.

Gregan should have retired prior to the 2003 RWC.

It gives you an idea of how tough Bernie Larkham was to be set up with Gregans hospital passes not only in Super14 but in Tests as well. No wonder he had more strapping than King Tut
