    New stadium scrapped

I just heard on the radio that the Multi-Purpose Stadium and Swan River re-development have been officially scrapped by the State Government

WA’s new football stadium has been taken off the agenda by the Barnett Government for at least two years in favour of a new children’s hospital at a cost of $800 to $900 million.

"There will be no new or remodelled football stadium in Perth for several years, after the State Government today slashed its capital works program.

Premier Colin Barnett also announced the new museum proposed for the old East Perth power station site would now be built in the Northbridge cultural precinct.

He said the former Labor government's plans for the Perth foreshore would also be significantly scaled back.

The Liberals have taken two controversial stadium proposals - to either build a new one at Kitchener Park or upgrade the existing Subiaco Oval - off the discussion table for at least two years.

The public service would also be cut, with staff numbers capped at the present level of 99,155 and a hiring freeze implemented as the Government battles a fall in revenue which could see the state in deficit earlier than predicted.

However, Mr Barnett committed to a new children's hospital to replace Princess Margaret, the extension of the northern suburbs railway line to Brighton and a new police complex at Northbridge."

Next stop point after that: Guilderton. Lancelin after that.

It would be hard to argue against the hospital option in the current climate. I also heard the interview and the MES upgrade was certainly not thrown out and CB once again agreed that Soccer and Rugby should have their own home.

BTW.....Was the Swan River front redevelopment ever anything but a pipe dream?

Toodaloo to the Albino Pachyderm. Not at all dissapointed to hear the foreshore redevelopment was dead too- I know those were suppossed to be 'conceptual' drawings but if the realisation of them looked anything like that I would have been spewing.

Good to hear TEF- did he actually use those words- cos I'd be pretty heartened if he did.

Heard the talk back on ABC radio as I was driving here to Bunbury.

Barnett was VERY positive that the "multi purpose" part of a new stadium was definitly not suitable and would not be in any design for a future stadium.
He said the idea of moving stands havent worked in other stadia and would nnot be used.
Also he said that the idea of 30,000 rugby and soccer fans in a 60,000 seat stadium would look a bit "sad".
He denied a deal had been done with Rugby WA but that they were in discussions with Sports Minister Waldron and they would announce something if anything was decided.

    Cheers Gerry.

Looks like Barney (or someone in his office anyway) has started listening to the rectangular codes. How refreshing.

Gonna start a book on how long it takes the WAFC to get their bitch on?

Ch 9 news was showing someone from the WAFC already talking about how they now want a staged redevelopment of Subi.

That would have been at about the same time as you posted.

That was FAST. So, do they want to start with a $1mill pie cart upgrade?

It's an interesting set of decisions. Given that infrastructure spending *should* increase in a recession (temporary govt debt less damaging + generates jobs + you have something to show for it at the end of it all... unlike once-off hand-outs)... CB has chosen his causes carefully. I wonder if the rail line runs through marginal seats?

Anyway, I'm glad the folly of a "multi-purpose" stadium has been realised. So long as MES still gets it's money, I'm pretty happy with that.

This can only be good news for all the corner codes!!!

I haven't heard such good news since my wife got a pregnant.

Now all we need to hear is that agreements have been made for upgrades to MES; or should I say the Forcefield!! That is a funny one!

Anyways things keep looking up for the Force at MES.

    So so so happy!!!!!
