From my point of view, a future Australian citizen- as soon as I get round to doing the paperwork, I would say you are reading a wee bit too much into his statement.

He was born and brought up a New Zealander and I'm sure he has a geat deal of passion for NZ. However, he has decided to make a life here and realises that his kids are more likely to be Aussies than Kiwis so he's made a commitment to that effect. I think it is great that such a high profile guy like him has done what he has done. I know many Kiwis who have been here for 20 - 30 years plus, have Australian kids, Australian jobs and are committed to life here and have not bothered to become citizens....and they should be and this may be enough to encourgae them.

I'm sure,if called to do so, he would fight for Australia as well as his homeland. I would.

That I think is the essence of what it is to be a citizen.

I couldn't be bothered reading the article. David Kirk has always come across to me as an anti Australian wanker. That's enough reason for me to think he's still also a hypocritical Kiwi wanker as well.

I'm glad to hear you would, but the way Kirk was reported, it doesn't sound like he would. It sounds like he'd just run back to NZ if it came to it.

How can you be Australian but be "All Blacks all the way" and have your "commitment to New Zealand"? That just doesn't make sense. At worst, he could barrack for Oz when we weren't playing against the Kiwis.

And if NZ is "practically a state of Australia" (and I'm pretty sure there's plenty of Kiwis who would howl in protest at that), why would he even bother?

    Australia - settled by convicts
New Zealand - settled by churchie pilgrims who didn't want anything to do with those awful convict scum, till they realised that they had more money.
