NZ rugby players freeze in Scotland

NZ rugby players freeze in Scotland

    January 11, 2009 - 4:18PM

Two rugby players from New Zealand have collapsed on the pitch suffering from hypothermia a minute from the end of a match in Scotland on Saturday.

Irvine's lower league home encounter against Aberdeen GSFP was abandoned with a minute remaining after Irvine's fullback Lance Elrick lost consciousness and the team's centre, Matt Kenny, had to be taken to hospital because of the cold.
Referee Finlay Clark had no hesitation in calling time.

"The score after 79 minutes was 0-0 and it was almost certain to go into extra time. It would clearly have been a danger to other players if we had continued."

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Was it really hypothermia or just boredom?

They should have taken a leaf from the mungos. Sometime back in the 60's or thereabouts, in the days of full tours, there was a midweek match where it was so cold that the Aussie back 3 played in track suits.

I played in a 0-0 draw once (went the full 80mins, none of this 79min abandonment)....Lismore v Alloa in 1991/2 season....at least 6 inches of mud covering the pitch, pouring rain & blowing a gale....perfect weather for 8-man rugby the way it was intended!!!

Typical Kiwis. Didn't even put in enough effort to raise their body temperature.
