Force players, staff issue vote of no confidence in coach

Force players, staff issue vote of no confidence in coach

    Nick Taylor

    December 27, 2008 06:30pm

THIRTY Western Force players and 10 staff have issued a vote of no confidence in head coach John Mitchell.

The player-led revolt, that included a ring-around of the club's out-of-town Wallabies, led to the inquiry that has sidelined Mitchell. They are unhappy with his no-frills approach and man management.

An insider said: "The whole thing was spurred by a player organised vote. It's been unsettling, but this thing has got to be sorted out."

It is understood that the dramatic dispute may not be settled by the time some of the club's Wallabies return for pre-season training in seven days.

Mitchell's manager, John Fordham, said Mitchell had every intention of completing his term as head coach, which ends in 2011.

He was confident a solution would be found before January 5, when Drew Mitchell, David Pocock and James O'Connor return for their first pre-season training.

"There have been some extremely positive developments aimed at resolving outstanding issues," Fordham said.

30 players signing says there are very substantial issues to resolve. Reports from Mitchell's camp say he will regain control on Jan 5. They also say he's asked for the mediation and accepts that some of his methods may need to change. That's a big positive in my books. The others need to work constructively too. Giteau and other senior squad members being positive part of a successful process would be a great outcome.

Hopefully some relationships are stressed but not broken. Get it fixed and move forward. We need our Head Coach in charge.

It would be nice to know what the 30 players signed - was it "We the undersigned are unhappy with the coach/player relationship" or "We the undersigned want the coach sacked"? If it was the first, I wonder how many would also say the second?

Farrout. If this is true, it would be interesting, as Andy said, to know what they signed.

my cousin drives a concrete truck.

if we all pitched in, we could pool enough money to get him to deliver a load to RugbyWA... it seems like a few of the players could do with a cup or two...

30 players is an awful lot but i'd be more inclined to think it was about resolving issues rather than sacking him...they're actually following protocol.

I would have to agree with Jehna. 30 players is a lot. And 10 staff members makes it a whole lot worse.

Unfortunately, PB, you're not playing in a professional club that competes in the Super 14. In fact, Baysies have been really lucky to have a great 1st grade coach as does a lot of WA clubs. But if 30 players (which is more than 3/4 of the club), says that they arent happy with the coach and they dont feel confident that they can work effectively under him, there is obviously a problem here. And a good chance it starts with the coach.

I would prefer if it is resolved without anyone leaving, but if someone needs to go, then im afraid i'd have to go with JM being let go. We can't have 30 players with low morale playing in the Super 14.

How does it go from being all peachy in yesterday's paper to today's paper saying we're up the creek without a paddle & a mutiny?!

Also, how do they get that 30 players & 10 staff have voted when the only quotes in the article are:

    • "The whole thing was spurred by a player organised vote. It's been unsettling, but this thing has got to be sorted out." What thing? For all we know they could have been voting on whether to wear their home or away jerseys for the Crusaders match or whether or not to go to Rotto this year.
    • "There have been some extremely positive developments aimed at resolving outstanding issues," Fordham said.
    • Fordham said: "Although the speculation has led to numerous inquiries from overseas, John is the head coach of the Western Force."

I'm miffed how all of this can be going on & reported when RugbyWA & the players are on holidays until January 5
