I didn't understand the rules around the Eagle's last touchdown - something about whether he was still a runner or had he been tackled when he touched the ball down?

I thought they were questioning whether he had control of the ball (volume was down), from my extremely limited knowledge of NFL rules I don't believe he is tackled until his body has touched the ground ie knee. But in this case the ball went over the line, then the ball grounded before the player did all over the line. Maybe Pats coach was just grasping at thin air in hope, utilizing a review in the last minutes

If a receiver has control of the ball for two steps before they go to ground or are tackled they become a 'runner' and the catch is deemed to have occurred.

If they haven't become a runner, then to complete the catch they have to go to ground with control of the ball - any bobbling of the ball in their grasp deems it not to be a catch.

If the Eagles player was a runner, then breaking the plane of the goal counts as the touchdown, and spilling the ball when it hits the ground isn't a fumble, because the play is deemed over when the touchdown occurs. However, if the Eagles player wasn't a runner (ie, if he is still in the process of making the catch), then breaking the plane of the goal doesn't count as the touchdown as he doesn't have full possession. As the ball came out when he hit the ground, the catch is deemed incomplete. From my view, the ball wasn't in complete control for those two steps prior to contact and the Eagles player hitting the ground. However, it's a very grey area which even players, coaches, announcers and hell, even the officials, deem subjective. Actually, I don't really have a problem with that touchdown; the call on the field was a touchdown and it can only be overturned with compelling evidence, which wasn't there.

I've a much bigger problem with an earlier touchdown where the Eagles receiver seemed to put his second foot down out of bounds, and then lose control of the football as he hit the ground. However, the camera angles were mostly from behind, and the one really good camera angle was cut away from as the player went to ground, so you couldn't see the loss of control. But the way he held the ball when he got up was very different to the way he was holding it when he was making the catch, so the ball must have moved in his grasp. That touchdown was in the 1st half (I think) and also had the officials looking at it for quite a while.

Well actually it's still a waxing gibbous. But you're almost right. Give it another week or so.
