So much for the big yarpie population in Perth, with both Bulls games in the bottom 5 attended, especially when I thought the Bulls were the Collingwood of yarpieland?

There is a friend of mine that has a theory that goes along the lines of this.

Attendances for matches against NZ opponents are always higher because Kiwis are more likely to buy a ticket on game day.

Ticket sales are always lower for Saffa based sides as most Saffa ex-pats are members of the Force and have season tickets.

We need to get to the end of a full cycle (ie end of '09) to really be able to pick it apart with each team having two matches here, but I would think there are several factors at play, including the expat community of each visiting team.
The Brumbies and the Chiefs have distorted '06 attendences being our 1st and 2nd matches respectively, where as they probably have two of the lowest expat communities, certainly for their respective Nations.
The Bulls was also our lowest crowd in 2006 and SA teams have shown to have the lowest National average.
The Waratahs figure is a bit bewildering though, on the surface you would pick that to be right up there with the Crusaders as the match of the year.

Notice that the highest crowd for each year is the first game of the year?

Should be in for a decent crowd to open the new season with the Blues already pulling 30k at the end of the '07 season!

The Tahs game this year was really dissapointing , given the rivalry, the potential expat community and that it was probably a 'make or break' game for the season- the later games against the Chiefs and Brumbies the season was practically (Chiefs) or literally (Brumbies) over, so you can kind of understand the enthusiasm wearing off a bit by then.

That match we still had a chance of making the finals.....look at 2008 to see how competitiveness affects crowd figures. The crowds will drop rapidly if we lose to the Blues

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Should still be in with a chance of making the Finals this time too I hope
With the Cheetahs to follow there will be a sharp drop off anyway but hopefully with the Sharks we will see a lift as seemingly the only Saffa team with any crowd pull.

S'pose it depends why people want to go to the match (I have this in mind because of Peterss' survey...) - if it's to enjoy watching a rugby match, then the team's position on the ladder or the significance of the tie shouldn't matter.

There's obviously a rugby hardcore in Perth but maybe also a few too many fairweather friends? Guess that's why 'Save it for the Game' etc - to remind people that they're part of it - a good crowd spurs on the team, as we know.

Not wanting to turn up and support your team through the bad as well as the good is like being a player and not trying because you think you can't win.

I might not be able to play, but I can play my part.

(Copyright note to Rugby WA - if you want that one, my terms are very reasonable!)

Yeah I thought so too. I'm hoping that when (if?) the expansion happens we might see some stronger rivalries brewing between the Australian teams...

Em, I totally agree with you.

Unfortunately the nature of most sports is that there will always be bandwagoners- even Perth's beloved West Coke with the mile long wait list suffered the same fate once their season was clearly stuffed.

    Reality's a bugger sometimes.

    P.S. Love the catchphrase!
