Pre-Season Training

Pre-season kicked off today with the squad members not currently touring

a number of strength and flexibility tests, skinfolds, followed by a yo-yo test (similiar to a beep test).
channels 9 & 10 as well as fox sports were present so you may see some on the news
pre-run interview with JM is on rugbyWA and AJ gave a post-run interview

the fittest forwards were:
Hockings- approx. lvl 16.8
Beef- early 16s
Horua- cant really remember, around 15 i think
least fit: new comer Brendon Odear (sp?)

fittest backs:
Justin Turner- lvl 18.7 or .8
Daruda- 18.1 or .2
daruda had to reach 8.1 to get 2 weeks off and managed to force himself to get there
least fit: cant remember but im pretty sure all the backs made at least lvl16

no problemo

yo-yo is slightly different to the beep
in yo-yo its (for example):
level 8.1
beep1 run 10 meters
beep2 run back
beep3 10 seconds rest to walk around a marker and back (about 3 meters)
level 8.2
time between b1-b2 and b2-b3 is the same but gets shorter

im sure ive described that in a more complicated way than was required haha

We use to run till you hurled or collapsed. If you were one of the last to do either, you were pretty fit. If you were one of the first then you had some work to do.

yer, it makes a lot more sense when ur watching it

maybe if we just say its 2 beep-test runs in a row and then 10s rest

The yo-yo test is like a sadistic coahces' beep test.
Its very similar to the beep test, in that you work to a beep, but once u cross the finish line, you have to go around a cone a couple of metres past the start/finish line as a short recovery period. You then have to start again on the line exactly when the beep goes.
There's the speed-endurance one which doesnt go for long, but kills you. then theres the endurance one which goes for a while, but is not as tough.

EMIRATES WESTERN FORCE OPEN 2009 PRE-SEASON TRAINING

It was back to work today for the Emirates Western Force as 2009 pre-season training kicked off at Rugby Park.

Squad members assembled at the team’s headquarters at Perry Lakes this morning to begin preparations for the 2009 Investec Super 14 season.

The training squad, minus the team’s seven Wallabies representatives, began the day with medical, nutritional and strength & conditioning screening before taking to the field for running tests.

“First day back it’s always very tough and it was no different today,” said fourth-year prop AJ Whalley.

“The beep test really hurt actually, I must admit, but we’ve all just come back from our annual leave and everyone is really refreshed and excited about being back together and back into training,” he said.

Having completed a five-match development tour of England on September 1, the Perth-based team is the first of the Australian Super 14 outfits to report for 2009 pre-season training.

Coach John Mitchell said players would be rewarded if they come through today’s preliminary testing.

“We’ll have the results (of testing) tomorrow and if they are positive then those players will be rewarded and trusted to carry on (with conditioning) on their own accord,” said Mitchell.

“Other’s will be required to shift physically over the next eight weeks.”

With the team’s seven Wallaby tourists not due to join their Super 14 teammates in Perth until mid-January, Mitchell said the first two months of training would offer players a chance to focus on individual goals.

“We’ve taken a totally different approach to pre-season this year, starting with today’s testing, which will give us an important basis from which to move forward,” he said.

“Essentially we’re not a team at all at the moment. We’re not worried about the numbers on (player’s) backs. It’s more about how they front today and getting them to focus on where they can improve physically as individuals over the next eight weeks.”

Among the activities in week one of pre-season training is a sand hills session at Scarborough on Friday, following a tough conditioning session at King’s Park tomorrow morning.
