WANNEROO STUN NEDDIES WITH SHOCK AND AWE BLITZ

An irresistible force, Wanneroo blitzed Nedlands 42-23 in one of the most astonishing finals games in recent history to win the 2008 preliminary final at Rugby Park today in RugbyWA’s club competition, sponsored by KWIK Crane and Transport Hire.

Unsung heroes of the 2008 competition and dogged by last year’s wooden spoon tag, the Roo-dogs have performed consistently throughout the year and peaked with precision timing to upset Perth-Bayswater in the minor semi-final and Nedlands today, after losing to both teams twice each in the competition.

Wanneroo had a slight edge in first half possession and Nedlands in the second half, and the Roo-dogs had the better of the scrums. Both teams had a wealth of opportunities in an all-action game but it was the aggression of Wanneroo's forwards and the hunger of their backs that made the difference, pouncing on chances with savage determination to leave Neddies picking up the crumbs.

The match opened with an explosion of scoring and controversy, and the first half unfolded with a hit parade of tries that gave Wanneroo an unbeatable 29-13 lead. The second half was quieter and Nedlands threatened an unlikely comeback with three classy tries, but the Roo-dogs smashed them aside on a destructive path to the grand final....

Bill Watt told me I had to write a good report about Wanneroo for a change. I did my best.

The sad fact is it takes a while to lose the "wooden spooner" tag and before the finals Wanneroo had not beaten any of the other finalists, so it's not unreasonable that they should go into the series as underdogs.

But like Perth-Bayswater last year they appear to be peaking at exactly the right time, and a Wanneroo-Kalamunda grand final is great for WA club rugby. No offence to the western suburbs clubs but a breath of fresh air is no bad thing.

Best of luck to both teams for next Sunday and judging by the high-scoring competiton matches between them (160 points scored in two games!) it could be one hell of a grand final.

Only having a joke Ric. Great report
So you know Bill Watt, but then who doesn't! Does last week's win mean Wanneroo get the Watt cup back?
You're spot on Ric. Kala v Wanneroo, a breath of fresh air. Where were the "Big 5" in the Top 4?
Looking forward to a great final.

Bill and I go way back. We still play together for Wanderers Golden Oldies. Bill is a legend and it was a great idea to name the cup after him considering his massive contributions to Perth-Bayswater and Wanneroo. Bill himself is embarrassed by the accolade though, being a man of few words and fewer airs and graces.

As far as I know the cup is up for grabs each time the two clubs play so the Roo-dogs should have it in their keeping for the summer.

Gee we've got some talent this year. Our front row is massive. Maybe the Force should play the winner of the GF? Or at least the academy team should.

Word is Troys got a contract to play in Ireland next year. Why is talent like this being missed by the WA recruiters?

I only hope the Force has left scouts behind and they have been going to these games.

Honestly have you seen a better centre all year than our number 12 Palei this season. From the opening trial game we said "F*** he's good".

Plays all over, mostly at full back lately. Young fella with blondish hair, although I think he is a ranga in denial.

Troy is hell good and he plays outside back. You could tell how good Palei is when he played along side Junior as well.
