WA bids for 2018 Commonwealth games
ABC Perth - WA bids for 2018 Commonwealth games
The West Australian Premier, Alan Carpenter, has announced the Government's intention to bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Mr Carpenter made the announcement at the soon-to-be demolished Perry Lakes Stadium, which was built for the VII British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1962.
He said the Department of Sport and Recreation and Tourism Western Australia had been asked to consider the feasibility of a Perth bid, including the cost and the economic benefit to the State.
The Commonwealth Games Association is due to make a decision on the successful host city in 2011.
"Perth will soon boast some of the best sporting facilities in the world and the 2018 Commonwealth Games would allow us to maximise their potential," the Premier said.
"Designed primarily for football, the new 60,000 seat multi-function sports stadium to be built at Kitchener Park, could easily accommodate track and field events, as well as host the opening and closing ceremonies.
"We are also building the 14,000 seat Perth Arena indoor stadium on Wellington Street and a new state athletics centre and eight-court basketball stadium at AK Reserve in Floreat.
"These state-of-the-art facilities, along with a range of existing world-class venues, mean Perth would be well placed to host most mandatory and discretionary sports likely to feature in the Commonwealth Games."
Mr Carpenter said some of the other issues to be considered included the need to accommodate tens of thousands of athletes, officials and visitors.
He said the Government would need to provide additional security, transportation and communication services.
The Government will also look at the impact on the Football Federation's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
You may find some ammo in that little lot

Well, at least they'll be able to accomodate aquatic sports, what with the new Canal and all...
They really are stupid, eh.
Obviously nobody's told Carpenter that the Freo Shockers won't be playing at the Commonwealth Games or that the Australian Rugby 7's team will be. So unless he's planning a RUGBY STADIUM he will not have a snowball's chance of seeing them play in Perth. Sheesh!!
Unfortunately the fact that Buswell even got a look in shows that there is absolutely nobody worthwile in the Liberal Party. So even somebody as dumb as Carpenter is probably gonna get re-elected.

As if re-reading the stadium taskforce report hadn't done enough to get me arked up all over again, they say immeasureably painful, stupid things like that....
EXCLUSIVE: PERTH'S bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games could be doomed - because the likely athletics venue fails to meet key international criteria.
International athletics meets -- including the Commonwealth Games -- have a mandatory requirement that the proposed ahtletics venue, Kitchener Park stadium, cannot realise.
That is a 400m warm-up track with facilities available for throws and jumps within walking distance of the main stadium.
The decision to build the billion-dollar stadium at the Subiaco site surrounded by homes was effectively the death sentence for the city's chances of hosting an internationaal athletics competiton.
When questioned by The Sunday Times in April, Sports Minister John Kobelke conceded the main focus of the decision to build at the site was on domestic sport.

And yet in several media releases it has been mentioned that the new stadium will be a part of Perths bid to be included in the Soccer World Cup in 2018?
Can't get more domestic than AFL, popular in 3 states nationwide and no where else in the world

Yep, that's the embarrassing think about this little stoush BLT, our arguments are easy to find, and delivered in our opposition's own words. The really unfortunate part is that nobody in the media seems to be finding the points we bring up. Even when we send them marked in highlighter.
Makes you wonder about Jargan's conspiracy theory doesn't it?
C'mon the
When this was being discussed in ABC radio this morning I sent a txt along the lines of...
One of the most popular events at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games was the Rugby 7's. And for this we need a proper rectangular stadium. So instead of the white elephant that the Rugby fans dont want, build a rectangular stadium now.
We Need Corners - A Rectangular Stadium For Perth!
Well it was read out and when Carpenter was asked about infrastructure for other sports he went on and on about how we already have that catered for and that the government was already bulding some wonderful facilities for Rugby over the road from Perry Lakes.
The guy has got NO IDEA>
Thanks for the shoutout Gerry!
And just so we do'nt stray too far off topic- Thursday arvo dudes???? Can it be done?
This is pathetic and smells like they need to justify this stadium on paper and can't without some major event like the commonwealth games - I'd put real money on Carpenter is looking for federal monies for the stadium - what an idiot. Rudd want the Soccer World cup - ergo the only federal monies will be for rectangular stadiums to FIFA standards - guess we Perth misses out again - need someone sensible to elect to government
61 years between Grand Slams Was the wait worth it - Ya betta baby
GIGGS, wouldn't this be just the type of political point scoring opportunity oppo members like House would be looking for? Maybe Coach could make a "suggestion" for a story by Nick Taylor on the stupidity of the Kitchener proposal in light of how it will inhibit the possibilities for just about every sport EXCEPT GayFL. Maybe Rick Boyd could get on the case or maybe some other media contact members might have. Think I'll ring Sports Central tonight.
