The Cox Group were commissioned by the Department of Sport & Recreation to provide a full Architectural Service to produce the new athletics facility on the land parcel bounded by Underwood and Stephenson Avenues, within the Town of Cambridge. A site analysis was undertaken to review the preferred site, orientation and grandstand location of the proposed new Athletics Stadium. A preliminary schematic of the athletics track and field template based on the IAAF standard 400 metre running track configuration and additional briefed field facilities was prepared to indicate the size of the facility’s footprint and broad spatial relationships. The grandstand provides for 2000 fixed seats and its architectural intent is to emphasise a dynamic, structurally expressive roof form reflecting the tension of human movement that floats as a ‘parasol’ structure over a relatively simple, robust masonry base.

The roof is gonna be big enough to keep the midday sun or rain out without having supporting pillars ruining the view and the stand is made of concrete.
