The Pay TV ratings are good news for rugby

The Pay TV ratings are good news for rugby

The NSWRU has published its television figures achieved during the 2008 Super 14 season, and they make great reading for rugby fans.
Fox Sports Super 14 ratings have increased by 19 per cent this season. More than 2.3 million viewers watched the Super 14 coverage throughout Australia, averaging 100,000 viewers for each game.
Curiously, the best-watched match was the Highlanders-Waratahs encounter in round three.
This was a day match in New Zealand and played in Australia around 3.30 on a Saturday afternoon. Without wanting to generalise (too much anyway!), this was before men went to the pub and before the favourite program of many of their wives (Big Love), which clashed with the main Australian game at 8.30.
If this theory is correct, another 70,000 or so viewers who are in pubs should be added to the average home viewing total.
I know the Reds-Waratahs match was on the pub I went to. The game had about 50 people expressly watching it in one of its room. This number would probably be bigger in larger hotels and clubs.
Jim L’Estrange puts the success of the Waratahs down as the main ingredient to the increased viewing numbers.
This is undoubtedly correct. I’d also like to suggest that the more expansive and free-flowing game played under the ELVs could have been a factor, too.
What are the views and experience of The Roar readers?

yeah i saw a article about mid-way through the S14 season, that said ratings in Australia were up almost 20%..

This is fantastic news, hopefully they improve somewhat next season and that should mean that SANZAR will have a much better bargaining tool when the start to negotiate the new deal in 2009.

Also throw in the S14 semi-final on this weekend where the team with the biggest supporter base is playing, and we should see fantastic figures to round out the year.

Good to see the terrible 2007 year behind us, with rugby striving forward once again.

    here it is

    Super 14 TV Ratings Soar

The Rugby Union Players Association is pleased to note from recent OzTAM Data that Australian television audiences for Super 14 Rugby have after Round 8 of this season’s competition increased by a massive 20% compared to Round 8 of last year’s competition.

Tony Dempsey, Chief Executive Officer of the Rugby Union Players Association said:
“This is a wonderful result for Australian Rugby. Clearly the results are linked to the positive on field results of Australian rugby teams competing in this year’s Super 14 (particularly the Waratahs and Western Force) and the free flowing action packed fast pace of the game due to the introduction of this year’s Experimental Law Variations. We welcome these encouraging signs as a signal of a revitalisation of the code in this country and look forward to more positive results in the weeks ahead.”

    * The Rugby Union Players Association Inc membership includes the Wallabies, NSW Waratahs, Qld Reds, ACT Brumbies and the WA Western Force.

obviously the article has to be taken with a grain of salt, considering RUPA are just as eager as the ARU to boost the value of the game.

I can tell you that at Subiaco they are heading south as more punters watch at home on Foxtel so they can see what's happening. Foxtel loves it but it's not news around here, eh??

Isn't Big Love about a bloke with multiple wives? Why is it so popular in NSW?

    Big Muslim population?

Another reason for bigger audiences to the earlier games could be they don't clash with club fixtures.

They can't be mormons. These days most mormons are Islanders, and they know how to play rugby.
