WESTERN FORCE winger Drew Mitchell looks likely to miss selection for the first Wallabies squad of the season after injuring his ankle.

Mitchell, who was ruled out of last night's Super 14 clash with the Brumbies, was injured in a collision with teammate David Pocock during Thursday's captain's run at Subiaco Oval.

An MRI scan confirmed a high ankle sprain, meaning a spell on the sidelines of four to six weeks.

Australia take on Ireland in the first Wallabies Test of the season on June 14.

Meanwhile, Reds winger Peter Hynes, a possible bolter for Wallabies selection, has praised coach Phil Mooney for restoring lost pride and passion in the Queensland jersey for tonight's showdown with NSW.

Hynes commended Mooney for helping to rebuild the Reds' self-respect after a disastrous 2007 season under the autocratic Eddie Jones.

In a subtle critique of Jones, Hynes said the former Wallabies coach lacked the passion and single-minded focus needed for the job. "Phil Mooney has done fantastic things with the Reds, and Phil's a passionate Queenslander, which is a pleasant change," he said.

"Eddie was Eddie and he had his own style, and unfortunately we didn't perform well under it.

"He moved on and we moved on, and we've got a coach who's a passionate Queenslander.

"He's restoring that passion and that history back into the jumper, and that's what we need."

Jones led Queensland to last year's wooden spoon and a humiliating 92-3 loss to the Bulls.

Hynes, who is in career-best form and rated by Waratahs enforcer Rocky Elsom as NSW's main danger, said there was no chance they would capitulate in the same manner tonight.

"We really love the fact that we could potentially end their season, and that's a huge motivation for us," he said.

The versatile winger, who can also play fullback and outside-centre, is strongly in the mix for a Wallabies bench spot and is expected to be named in Australia's 30-man Test squad on June 2.

In looking at '07 it would appear Peter has decided to stick to the "Players win matches, Coaches lose them" line rather than sharing any accountability in the problem.

This is good news for Irish Fans - really Mitchell is superb at capitalising on any tiny gap and getting it across the line.

Don't know if this is true - someone suggested that the internationals played before Aug 1st aren't going to use ELV's is this ture - if it is then the game against Ireland could be a cracker as the Wallabies will have to adjust to the old laws and a new coach in one game.

I wouldn't rule him out just yet. Ankle injuries have a habit of healing a lot faster than anticipated

i asked him how it was last night and he told me he'd be right for the international season and laughed at the fact that i have NO CREDIT THANKS TO HIS STUPID ANKLE coz i spent the ENTIRE two and a haf hours in the car on the way up trying to find out how he was. he was pretty sure he'd be ok... i hope so!!!

yeah he has 2 where that ankle thing for 10 days but he just laughed at the fact he was injured!
he said he was good!
