Stormers flanker Schalk Burger cited for dissent

Our naughty boy from Cape town

Stormers flanker Schalk Burger will appear before a judiciary today after being cited for showing dissent at a touch judge in the Super 14 on Saturday.

Burger joined a fracas in the Stormers-Sharks match at Durban and was reported by touch judge Willie Roos and yellow-carded by referee Kelvin Deaker.

But as Burger walked off the field he gesticulated at Roos, implying that Roos should open his eyes.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

With the ELVs providing for a free kick for "not releasing" (either version: tackler not releasing or ball carrier not releasing) and these free kicks being awarded in slightly more than a nanosecond, it will not take long before they revert to penalties for repeat infringements. Schalk will be well in the frame again, methinks.

Maybe a book on how many yellow cards he gets in the season?

Geez Ecky, that'd be like trying to bet the spread on the Blues/Lions game last weekend (anywhere between 12 and 150)

Springbok and Stormers flank Schalk Burger was found guilty of an "act contrary to good sportsmanship" by a Sanzar judicial committee in Cape Town on Monday after gesticulating to referee's assistant Willie Roos in Saturday's Super 14 match against the Sharks in Durban.

Sentence has been deferred to Tuesday.

Burger appeared before the committee on Monday after being cited by citing commissioner Corrie Strydom for gesticulating to Roos when he walked off the field after being yellow-carded in the match. Burger formed his hands into what looked like mock glasses, inferring that Roos' eyesight was deficient.

Burger was charged and found guilty of transgressing Law 10.4 (k) when walked off he field after sevens minutes of the second half of the match.

The yellow card was issued by referee Kelvin Deaker, who had consulted Roos on Burger's actions in joining a fight between other players. The yellow card was not a decision taken by Roos, but by the referee himself.

Stormers prop Brian Mujati later came close to repeating the act when he was unhappy about something that had happened at a ruck, but was not as blatantly mocking as his teammate earlier.

Schalk racked up his first yellow card 3 minutes into his first match last season.
His 4 match suspension during the World Cup (reduced to 2 on appeal) and repeated charges just show what a dirty cheating freak he is. Even his Wiki talks about "does have a problem on field with accruing yellow cards" Ha!

Stormers flanker Schalk Burger was suspended for two matches on Tuesday after being found guilty of "an act contrary to good sportsmanship'' by a Super 14 disciplinary committee.

The committee also banned Bulls number eight Dewald Potgieter for one match for a dangerous tackle.

Burger, a member of South Africa's 2007 World Cup-winning team, will miss Friday's match against the Crusaders in Cape Town and the following game against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on March 8, organisers said in a statement.

He was charged for making an abusive gesture to a touch judge after being yellow carded on the recommendation of the official in Saturday's match against the Sharks in Durban.

Burger conceded he had acted in breach of the laws but strongly denied abusing the South African official, Willie Roos.

Potgieter spear tackled a Crusaders player in the Bulls' 54-19 defeat by the New Zealanders on Friday. He will miss the Bulls' match against the Sharks in Pretoria on Saturday.

    Appeal possible over Burger ban

Schalk Burger could still play against the Crusaders on Saturday morning.

It seems a long shot, but the Stormers may appeal against the two-match ban slapped on flanker Burger by Sanzar judicial officer Jannie Lubbe for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Burger was cited after he verbally challenged and then gesticulated towards assistant referee Willie Roos following his yellow card against the Sharks.

Media manager Frikkie Erasmus initially said the Stormers hoped to decide whether to appeal on Tuesday but they were still mulling over their options yesterday.

If they did appeal, he said, it "would not be against the sanction".

Erasmus was vague about what exactly the Stormers would appeal against, but it seems likely the procedure that led to Burger's suspension would be challenged.

One of the first things, he said, was for Sanzar to establish when an appeal committee comprising three representatives from the three countries could convene. If required, it would then discuss the issue via a telephone conference.

Burger's absence against the Crusaders would be a huge blow for the Stormers, who are still looking to get their first win of the season.

Well I know he's a great player but I really don't think he alone will make the difference against the Crusaders
