Giteau proves difference for Force - Rugby - Fox Sports

FLYHALF Matt Giteau scored all 16 points as the Western Force edged the Central Cheetahs 16-15 in a thrilling Super 14 contest.

Giteau scored his team's only try and also landed a last-gasp penalty to help his side to their first win of the season.

For the Cheetahs, it was another agonising defeat after going down by a single point to the Lions in round one.

The home side got off to the perfect start in the sixth minute when fullback Hennie Daniller went over on the right after a wonderful sweeping move by his inside backs.

The conversion by Jacques-Louis Potgieter gave the Cheetahs a 7-0 lead, but it would be a good number of minutes before the home fans had anything further to cheer.

The early setback seemed to kick-started the Force and for the next 30 minutes the visitors completely dominated proceedings.

With Giteau playing the perfect distribution game and the backs running wonderful angles, it was the Force who controlled most facets of play.

Giteau got his team on to the scoreboard in the 10th minute after a clever switch move with centre Scott Staniforth which opened up the Cheetahs defence, allowing him to run in and score under the uprights.

His conversion levelled the scores and the visitors continued to pile on the pressure for the remainder of the half.

Giteau edged his side ahead at the midway mark of the first period with a three-pointer, but such was the domination of territory and possession by the Australians that they could easily have run in a few more tries before the interval.

The Cheetahs though defended magnificently, making some outstanding tackles in bringing down the likes of Giteau and Drew Mitchell, who caused havoc among the home team's back division.

It came as a major surprise when 10 minutes from the interval the Cheetahs struck a telling blow when openside flanker Heinrich Brussow picked up a loose ball which had squirted out of a Force scrum and dived over for his team's second try.

While Potgieter failed to add the extras, the Cheetahs went into the half-time break leading 12-10.

In a far more evenly matched contest after the interval, the visitors regained the lead through another Giteau penalty, before the home side sneaked ahead again through a penalty by replacement flyhalf Conrad Barnard.

Going into the final few minutes just two points ahead, Barnard failed to land what would have been the winning penalty, allowing the Force to counter-attack from deep and ultimately win a penalty after the 80 minutes were up.

Giteau seized his chance to win the game for the Australians.
