Callum Bruce, picked in the draft by the Chiefs late last year, is transferring to the Waikato Rugby Union.
Bruce had an out-clause in his Otago Rugby Football Union contract which enabled him to exit his two-year deal due to his non-selection in the 2008 Highlanders squad.
Hastings-born Bruce, 24, debuted for Otago in 2005 and played 22 games for the Highlanders since 2006. He played first and second five-eighth for both teams and made 24 appearances for Otago.

He is one of a number of players who have left Otago since late season.

Waikato chief executive Graham Bowen said his union was excited with the talented new recruit, who can cover 12 and 10 and is also a competent goal kicker.

"Callum's signing is important for the future success and development of Waikato rugby. The opportunity to boost Waikato's talent pool with a player of his calibre is exciting."

Bruce has signed a two-year-deal with Waikato.

Waikato have also secured such players as Liam Messam, Stephen Donald, Richard Kahui, Craig West, Dwayne Sweeney, Aled de Malmanche, Jackson Willison, Mark Burman, and Vern Kamo for another two seasons.
