This is racing related so here goes ...

As an enthusiast of thoroughbred racing it was extremly exciting to hear todays announcement that if re-elected, the WA Labor patry will pledge $30 mil for the upgrading of regional racetracks in WA. The big news though is Crapenters promise to increase stakes money for WAs premier group 1 race The Railway Stakes. Current stakes money is a pool of $1mil. The proposal announced today will lift stakes money for the Railway to: $3mil in 2009, $4mil in 2010 and peak at $5mil in 2011.
With a stakes pool of $5mil, The Railway Stakes would have a prize pool about $200 000 shy of the Melbourne Cup. This would also push its status to one of the premier 1600m races on the planet and the sceond richest race in the southern hemispher behind the Melbourne Cup. It would still trail the rich Dubai carnival that includes the $7mil Dubai Gold Cup. The spinoffs would include attracting some of the best thoroughbreds in the world and tourism.

Personally i think this is great news for thoroughbred racing in WA as it will dramatically increase racing in WAs profile nationally and internationally.
