    Argentine rugby 'a disgrace'

    Argentine rugby 'a disgrace'

From correspondents in Buenos Aires, Argentina
    December 29, 2007

FORMER Argentina rugby captain Agustin Pichot has slammed his federation chiefs, saying the domestic scene is a disgrace.

The 33-year-old scrum-half, who led the Pumas to third place in the Rugby World Cup with two victories over hosts France, was quoted as saying by Argentine daily La Nacion that he could not believe the manner in which the federation chiefs were dealing with the question about making the domestic game professional.

"What Argentine rugby is going through is a disgrace," Pichot, who played in four World Cups, winning over 70 caps, said.

"It is unbelievable what is going on at the moment."

Argentinian Rugby Union (UAR) president Alejandro Risler wants to leave the domestic league amateur but place the Pumas squad under contract.

The 2007 World Cup group threatened to strike months before the tournament because they were only being paid expenses.

However, Pichot was unhappy with Risler's proposal.

"The Argentinian directors change their minds every day, and in those conditions it is difficult to get anything done," Pichot, who is now plying his trade with Paris-based second-division club Metro Racing, said.

The UAR is due to meet this weekend to debate the matter.

Yeah, that's right - it'll all be different once they are run by an efficient and professional organisation like the ARU, NZRFU or IRB...then it'll all be about what's best for the game.

Sadly, not born - I'm what remains of a starry eyed idealist having been exposed to politics, expediency and self-interest.
