Force U20s Named for Clash in Canberra

    By David Berrie
    Fri 17th March 17

The Road Safety Western Force U20s have made several changes to their side who take on the Brumbies U20s this Sunday at Portsea Oval, Canberra in the last round of the Super Under 20s.

Big Nedlands lock Sam Offer comes back into the starting second row, while UWA flyhalf Anthony Hondras gets the nod after a brilliant performance off the bench last week, scoring two tries.

For the second week in a row all Pindan Premier Grade teams are represented, including five players from UWA and four from Palmyra.

The Future Force Foundation will have a strong showing this weekend with seven members in the 23, with Will Latu, Ben Grant and Naude Wessels all brought back into the side.

Head Coach Dwayne Nestor says the last game of the U20s season is an opportunity for the team to go out on a high against a strong Brumbies side.

“This weekend’s game is just all about performing well, and actually playing the game we set out to play at the start of the tournament.

“It would be great to get the win in Canberra, the guys have worked really hard to be competitive this season, and it would be just reward for what is a young side.”

The Road Safety Western Force U20s kick off against the Brumbies U20s at 11:00am (AWST). The match will be live streamed on rugby.com.au

Is a "Played 4 Lost 4" record acceptable?

Do we continue to reward mediocrity?

Losing 7-35 to the next team on the ladder is ordinary.

The Force desperately needs credible results from all WA teams at this point in proceedings.

A change in the coach might be a more successful way to finish the season off

Did you watch the game Darkness?

I wouldn't say that the Force U20s don't need to aim up, but the scoreline is not a good reflection of the game. When WA, VIC and the ACT competed for the Southern States competition, each state was represented by players from that state. Now that we have moved to the U20 system, other teams are recruiting very heavily to support their U20 teams. The starting halves for Victoria are both from NSW as are a handful of other players. I don't know the ACT team well enough to comment on them.

We have a couple of blow ins, but I think the emphasis is more on developing WA based players rather than winning an U20 tournament- which I am happy with.

Why are we talking about Tom Fearn, the team is coached by the winningest coach in the Force's history!

Watched the match - there are 5 good forwards there that were more than competitive and a game plan to suit your strengths should be implemented.

Yep, watched all of the games.

When you say "a couple of blow ins" you should have said " half the team are blow ins". Not wa developed players at all. So that blows that argument.

The history books won't say "the scoreboard didn't reflect the game ", it will say "lost 4 games straight ".

There won't be any history books. Nobody will care about the results of this years U20s by this time next year.

Apologies for the delayed response; been on night shift.

Quick scan of the wa team vs brumbies 20s would say that malola, vui, latu, holgate, grant, akolo and wessels are definitely imports. A couple of others I'm not sure about and there are a bunch of other imports in the 20s wider squad.

Only 4 of them started against the Brumbies. That is not half the team.

That being said, some of the attitude I saw against ACT was pretty poor (players standing about watching the next play rather then running back to support at the next ruck/take a pass etc).

Plenty of room for improvement but not all doom and gloom.

And in another twist to the wa under 20 saga, word on the street is that the coaches, manager and medical staff have as a group found a home at cott for the season.
