Queensland Reds defeat the Blues 31-24 in shock Super 14 result

    By staff writers
April 25, 2009 Queensland Reds have all but ended the Blues run towards the Super 14 finals, outlasting the hosts 31-24 and winning a Super rugby match in Auckland for the first time.

Just five minutes into the game, a power failure saw the lights at one end of North Harbour Stadium go out, resulting in both teams agreeing to leave the field until the problem was resolved.

Play got underway almost an hour later but the Blues looked like their minds were still in the sheds as the Reds raced to a 17-0 lead, the home side not getting on the scoreboard until after the half-time siren.

Berrick Barnes dominated the scoring for the Reds with a personal haul of 16 points as the visitors held strong in the second half for a bonus-point victory, finally shaking their Auckland hoodoo.

well, its no secret that the Reds needed this win massively, it was quite the upset and broke many hoodoos in the process, first time the Reds have ever beaten the Blues in Auckland, first win in NZ in 3 years and first away win in 2years?

i guess it also helped consolidate the Forces position on the ladder somewhat as well

Also good news for the force the reds bringing down the blues within reach of us. time to start going for the reds so that they topple a few more of the top teams in the coming weeks.

    QLD can't do anything right
That try after the fulltime siren allowed the Blues 2 bonus points.
Good effort though. Very impressive at the breakdown. Barnes was exceptional

Too bad they couldn't hang on to stop the losing BP. But still they did our boys a big favour. Go the Cheetahs. Go Waikato.

Forget the Brumbies. That loss to the Hurricanes has seen their finals chances sail. A double win for us- on one hand its one less team to compete with for the finals and on the other after that kind of loss we won't have to put up with Mudskipper's rubbish for at least a week.

I was only referring to the Brumbies for some Aussie bragging rights for the Reds.

The Brumbies large negative points difference effectively puts them 2 pts behind the force.

The Reds could definitely use it. I heard things are looking grim with Digby Ioane and Hugh McMeniman considering overseas offers. What a pair of mugs. The Reds kept McMeniman for years despite his horrendous injury history- the least he could do is pay them back for it. Even if only as long as it takes them to get back on their feet. As for Ioane, who is he going to be loyal to? He must be making the decision for financial security because of his young family. Ohh wait! He doesn't have one.

Digby would be first choice for a Wallaby wing in my opinion

The mail seems to be that both desperately want to stay in Qld, but ARU top ups is the issue. Agree with you about MMM repaying Qld's loyalty. I'd be hopeful that both will stay.

Agree Perthgirl - but he is pretty handy at No.13 too.

Apart from dropping that high ball tonight, he was awesome again (outrageously good actually). He is in career best form in my opinion.
