Exclamation Violence Explodes at Wellington 7s Competition

WELLINGTON: 4th Feb 2006: Our on the spot reporter Stu has just reported in from Wellington with some shocking developments during the course of the United States vs Iran Bowl Quarter Final.

"The game was played in a fairly rough fashion in the first half. Neither team could break the other's defensive line, with some absolutely huge tackles being made. Early in the second half a number of confrontations between USA and Iranian players had forced the Referee, Australia's Matt Dunning, to hold up play while he spoke to the opposing Captains.

In the sixth minute of regulation time Iranian winger Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani intercepted a loose pass and headed for the try line. United States Hooker Alan Cartwright set off in hot pursuit and caught up to Rafsanjani on the line. A tackle which l can only liken to a certain savage incident involving New Zealand's Richard Loe ensued. Rafsanjani did not get up.

Players from both sides arrived shortly after this bit of work with at least two Iranian forwards trading blows with the American Hooker. A wild brawl erupted with players from both teams exchanging round hat king hits. Diminutive Ref Dunning tried to restore order, but l have to report was man handled and thrown to the ground by a United States player l can identify as Steve Jordan.

Security forces took the field as the subs and sections of the crowd raced onto the field to join in what became a full scale riot. I'm talking claret and any number of injuries.

The game was abandoned with players from both teams looking to have been arrested by New Zealand Police.

At the moment l am waiting for an announcement from the NZRFU on the result of this shocking development."

RH: Stu any news on injuries?

Stu Wgtn: A number of players and spectators have been taken away in ambulances following the incident. No statement has been made as to the extent of injuries or number of casualtie.

RH: Have the NZRU made any statement about likely reprisals towards either team at this time?

Stu Wgtn: There's been no official announcement, but according to one official both teams are likely to be thrown out of the 7s competition and neither will receive an invitiation to next year's event.

    RH: Any statement from Police?

Stu Wgtn: Police have confirmed that two Iranian and three United States players were arrested on the ground. There is no comment about whether criminal charges will be laid in the next few days.

RH: What's the atmosphere like at the stadium currently?

Stu Wgtn: The ground announcer has called for calm and the crowd seems more interested in more games than in what has taken place. Sponsors Lion Nathan have indicated they will supply free beer for the next hour if people remain calm.

RH: Thanks fot the heads up Stu, we hope the rest of the day goes as planned.

Stu Wgtn: Thank you to RH. We can only hope things settle down from here on. I will keep monitoring the situation and will report any news as it comes to hand.

I know the Seppos like to have a wee riot when their team wins a world championship, but two days before the game?

... on the 6th day God played rugby and on the 7th day he rested, because he was sore and a little hungover.
