    Bulls hold on ...

Kala hosted the Premiership hopefuls who were looking for an early scalp in the new league structure and almost got it, taking several leads during the course of the game which went down to the last minute, a most enjoyable afternoon of rugby coupled with a pretty tasty and recommended ‘Bulls Burger’.

The first minutes of frantic activity resulted in a scrum that Kala used to demonstrate the size and effectiveness of their pack. The Lions scrum reversed at a rate of knots giving the hot steppin’ Kala backs their first possession however, with a turnover in the midfield the Lions outside backs moved the ball well through the hands up the far touch to take the first score.

Having been to Forestfield several times previously, it appeared a regular game plan was to drill down to Kala-Corner taking advantage of local support, territory and a physical pack to pressure visitors to regain possession. This was used on Saturday only once throughout the first half where a kicking game to keep the Lions defending may have led to a better half time score, which was testament to the wide eyed Lions backline that countered like a Barbarian side to score on more than one occasion under the posts, untouched.

For all exhibition of the handling and interplay, the real coach-killer of the penalty count was the extra defender Kala needed, quite an imbalance on that front as the Kala pack appeared much more disciplined, or they know how not to get caught?!

Lions looked confident with their display against an established Premiership club, perhaps a little too much as they leaked a score for each their own, keeping Kala in the game as they changed ends. A tactical kicking game towards the corners to pin Kala at the bottom of the hill may have produced the outcome Lions were after. Alas, like Kala in the first half they consistently attempted to use phases to gain the territory they searched for.

The home side, keeping in touch with the scoreboard used their home ground experience to continue working their way up the field, some well-placed kicks and effective chases led to good field position where continued turnovers were taken advantage of far more by Kala than the visitors.

Lions appeared to lack the experience to close out the game in the final stages, some positive opportunities they generated were simply squandered by inexperience and a little naivety and they left themselves adrift by a score. A flurry of penalties in the final minutes still couldn’t realise the points needed for a win, until the very last penalty of the game that went to the deserved Kala pack.

    Kalamunda won 29-26
