The Queensland Reds have appointed scrumhalf Sam Cordingley as their new captain to replace flanker John Roe.
With just one win from their opening four games, the Reds currently occupy 11th place on the Super 14 table and Cordingley has been given the captaincy in an attempt to get the team's season back on track.
Reds coach Phil Mooney said the decision to switch captains was made in the best interests of the team.
"John Roe has held the side together through the tough times and carried a larger share of the burden than should reasonably be asked of any single player," Mooney said.
"We have taken this difficult decision now because we believe it can help re-focus John and the team in their pursuit of success in 2008."
Roe, who has captained the Reds for three years, will continue to play on under Cordingley and is hoping the move will allow him to flourish as a player.
"Phil and I discussed it this morning and agreed that a change of leadership was in the best interests of the team," Roe said.
"It has been a great honour to captain Queensland and I look forward to continuing to serve the team and Queensland Rugby in whatever capacity I can."
The Reds next match is against last year's Super 14 champions, the Bulls, at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
