Fox Sports rugby commentator Greg Martin has slammed the IRB's decision to review James Horwill's stomping charge and suggested the British and Irish Lions could be driving a conspiracy.
In a shock development on Thursday night, the IRB released a statement confirming there would be a review of Horwill’s charge despite the Wallabies skipper being cleared of any wrongdoing at a marathon judicial hearing last Sunday.
The Wallabies lock was orignally cleared of stomping the head of Alun Wyn Jones by Nigel Hampton QC.
Horwill is free to play against the Lions in Melbourne this weekend but will now front a new hearing sometime next week, where he could potentially be ruled out of the final Test in Sydney.
The Lions were astounded by Horwill’s original clearance, leaving Martin to accuse the tourists as being the ones responsible for the IRB’s intervention.
"I’ve got no doubt it’s come from within the Lions setup," Martin told Rugby HQ.
"(they’ve said) ‘can you get rid of him (Horwill)? Can you help us out here? He should be gone’.
"The IRB wouldn’t worry about it unless somebody asked. Now who’s in the position to ask? It’s the Lions."
Fellow commentator and former Wallabies captain Nathan Sharpe said the IRB’s decision could be setting a dangerous precedent.
The IRB has intervened before in a case before with All Blacks backrower Adam Thomson, but that was only to increase the punishment after he'd already been found guilty.

Can we appeal the decision not to punish England for fielding 16 players against Samoa at the world cup?
if we lose Horwill then Deans should bring in Madness to replace him... hopefully he can re-align a few spines as retribution. Im sorry but im livid about this, it stinks...
I agree it stinks, but it's the decision after the incident that wreaks, not the incident itself.... I must have seen it 100 times since it happened & IMHO there is intent.
There is always controversy during a Lions tour. Umaga & Mealamu pile drove O'Driscoll in to the turf in 2005. Nathan Hines forearmed smashing Richard Hill in 2001? Berger eye gouging in 2009
Horwill can be a dirty player in the heat of battle, ask Pek & Hodgo. The incident with the Lions proves what a bad captain he is.
Or the chomp on Brett Sheehan?
There is a deeper problem here though, the Four Home Unions (and Europe in general) have too much influence over the IRB.
The CEO of IRB is an Aussie.
