Australia breaking ground at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup
What are three former AFL players who each played in the Grand Final doing in India?
Well… They’re not there just to take in the sights and grab a good curry.
They’re flying the Team Australia Flag at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in Ahmedabad, and despite having a worldwide TV audience in the ‘tens-of-millions’ here at home it’s the most addictive sport you’ve never heard about, and guess what? We’ve just had a win.
AFL Grand Finalists Campbell Brown (Hawthorn Hawks), Adam Schneider (St Kilda), and Stephen Milne (St Kilda) have just helped the Australian team to our first ever victory with a 68-45 victory over Argentina.
Wait… rewind… the Kab-what? Kebab world cup? Nope, the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.
And being a nation that loves to compete in anything, of course we have a team. A team thrown together hastily a few months ago that has never played a competitive game, but a team nonetheless.
You’d be forgiven for thinking we are pulling your leg. It doesn’t sound like a legitimate world cup… nor does it sound like something 15 million people would tune in to watch.
A mix between rugby, bull rush, and ‘schoolyard tip’, Kabaddi is unlike anything we’ve ever played in the western world – especially at a professional level.
