Georgina biting the hand that feeds her?
Those salary top up figures make me so angry.
She's pushing her own agenda. This has been happening for years and it's only now that voices her opposition?
They all have agendas. This one is ours too. What we should do is e mail or call the shock jocks over there and push OUR agenda. E mail the WA pollies with this latest bit of ammo as well. Keep them interested so the story doesn't become next weeks digital fish n chips wrappers.
Waste of effort trying to talk to the ARU.
Well aware that every journo has an agenda but why has she waited until the axe is hovering to voice what we've been saying for years?
Obviously! :iconrofl:
Was reading the article with the hope she'd mention Clyne's 28 million mantra - and the way it was split. Alas, no as she's got a big following over East.
Georgina was obviously under pressure from above as everyone else was bringing ARU inconsistencies to light and she didn't seem to be able to find anything to report about!
The mystical $28 million seems to be unmentionable! Why has no reporter picked up on it!
I personally wouldn't trust Georgina Robinson to say anything to benefit the Western Force. She is certainly no friend of the Force.
We always knew the general tenor of these top-ups but I reckon it's fantastic to finally get these numbers confirmed.
Just to confirm the Salary Caps:
Each team is provided $4.5 Million by the ARU.
An additional $0.5 Million can be provided by from Sponsorship which includes cars etc)
In addition ARU contracted Wallabies get additional Top-Ups as follows:
Waratahs - $2.6 Million
Reds - $1.05 Million
Brumbies - $1.3 Million
Western Force - $0.27 Million (I think this most likely covers Ben Mc & Dane H-P and maybe Adam C. Not only 1 player as GR suggests)
Rebels - $0.12 Million. (Sean M)
The ARU determines the "worth" of each Wallabies player and (as far as I know) the top-up component i.e. how much of the player's worth is expected to be covered from the Salary Cap.
Where the deals get very frustrating is when the ARU set the top-up very high with only a small component of the player's total payment come from the club's Salary. (Israel Folau? Karmichael Hunt?)
These numbers confirm only one thing - It was NEVER the intention of the ARU to create an "even playing field".
The Western Force and the Melbourne Rebels were set up to fail.
Clyne's comment that the ARU has known since 2015 that 5 Australian teams were unsustainable is very damning in light of the ongoing $2.6 Million/year payments to the Rebels and the Alliance Agreement with the Western Force.
For the sake of the game going forward I hope the Rebels and Force continue the legal fight.
There may be some short term pain but Australian Rugby will be better in the long run.
Hopefully we see changes at the top at the ARU and the establishment of a meaningful long term strategy to grow the game in Australia.
Well said Andrew.
Any accountants among you care to try and do a cost benefit analysis of the Force since its inception? I am damn sure it would reveal that the benefits (tangible and societal) outweigh the costs to the ARU several fold.
Without having to run the numbers we were largely self sufficient until a year or so ago. The benefits other benefits are clear for all to see with 12 or so products of the WA pathway playing for the Force and various others elsewhere which was one of the original goals of the 4th franchise when it was first awarded back in 2004 - to produce players and deepen the pool for Wallaby selection. Scrapping a side will not magically make the dozens of Australian players playing in a Europe come back to Australia.
The ARU has bailed out NSW and Qld multiple times since the inception of the Force yet we need a helping hand once and it's possibly he end of the road.
I agree with those on here who have floated the idea and I've seen it on GAGR as well, Rugby needs an independent body to run it or something similar to what happened to Australian soccer in 2003/2004/2005. Too many vested interests from various old boys networks.
Totally Jargs, it's the old boy networks which has caused this whole mess.
Just so that the numbers are readily available.
From the Annual Reports
The Trading/Operating Surplus/Deficit over the years as follows:
Year $ Million
2006 2.4
2007 1.0
2008 0.9
2009 0.7
2010 0.7
2011 0.4
2012 0.3
2013 0.9
2014 0.7
2015 2.4
2016 3.2 (??????) (2016 Annual report N/A)
What these numbers confirm is that the WF were still in Operating Surplus up until the end of 2014 - when we went to crap and needed the rescue from the ARU as it wasn't coming from anywhere else.
FYI
The Reds have accumulated deficit of $6.2 Million 2005-16 (-$3.0 Million in last 2 years)
The Waratahs have accumulated deficit of $0.2 Million 2010-15.
Have no numbers for the Brumbies or Rebels.
I don't expect the Rebels numbers to be easy to come across...
