Red 13 touches the ball in the in goal area and appears to knock it (off his hand then chin) on before Red 5 comes from in front of him to ground the ball.
does the offside law apply in the in goal area ?
so, the offside line is established at the point of the knock on?
with simmon (5) coming from the western force side of the offside line, to push the ball down?
we wuz robbbed!! ROBBED I say!
Yes, but it's little more than a question. I understand the assertion that it is possible to be offside whilst in-goal, however I can't for the life of me figure out how a reds player can be offside in that situation. The ball was in their in-goal and therefore running back over the tryline puts them onside for pretty much anything doesn't it? Yes, if they were in front of the kicker and hadn't been run onside by an onside player they could still be offside, however to do that, the kick would need to have been shorter than 6m and the kicker not run for the ball.....I cant remember the situation clearly (ie how did the ball get there) but I don't think it was kicked by the Reds, I think it was a kick by the force and carried back by the Reds....if I'm correct in that, the tryline puts anybody onside doesn't it?
ECKY?
when all other avenues have been examined in detail and led to nought, Occams Razor suggests reverse the situation and the truth shall be revealed.
If it was the Force in goal with Mafi grounding the ball from "offside", the Reds or 'Tahrds would have been awarded the try.
Simple ;)
Yep, I see my error now bison, thanks for your help!
I had a candid discussion with my Reds supporting brother at Suncorp Sat night, I was in his seats so I had to be a bit self controlled, but when the Force was awarded the first penalty of the match I cheered ( much to disgust of surroundings Reds members). When my brother told me to stop cheering penalties I told him I was cheering the miracle of Angus awarding any penalty to the Force.
I told him of AG's past sins and George's 124 TMO decisions against and 1 for the Force in our history. He thought I was unfair to the refs.
I think it does, but it would depend upon the situation.
For example, if a ruck is formed and the last feet of the defending team's ruck falls over the tryline, the common interpretation of the law is that the offside line exists at the tryline, not the last feet. In that situation, any player who retreats to the in-goal will, in effect, run himself onside.
If, however, the ball is kicked from behind the tryline, any player in front of the kicker is offside. I'm pretty sure the tryline doesn't save the player from getting pinged if they run forward and effect the tackle.
I can't think of many other situations to test the law with though.
Yes?
Generally speaking:
11.1 Offside in general play
(a) A player who is in an offside position is liable to sanction only if the player does one of three things:
•Interferes with play or,
•Moves forward, towards the ball or
•Fails to comply with the 10-Metre Law (Law 11.4).
A player who is in an offside position is not automatically penalised.
A player who receives an unintentional throw forward is not offside.
A player can be offside in the in-goal.
More specifically:
In general play a player is offside if the player is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball, or in front of a team-mate who last played the ball.
The Reds player who actually grounded the ball (the 3rd guy) was in front of his team-mate who last played the ball. He did not retreat to a position behind the ball before playing it (grounding it).
Easy, right?
Did Angus Gardiner forget to bring his cards last Saturday.. 1st game I have seen him ref the force with no yellows... Well done force boys
He could have pinged Hodgo at one stage.
My view of the grounding was that the Reds 13 (Kerevi?) was onside when he knocked the ball out of Alby's hands as he ran around and behind Hunt before getting to the ball. But the Reds 5 (Simmons?) was in front of Kerevi and never got back on-side by getting behind him prior to touching the ball.
It seems as if Angus was questioning George about this, but George said you can't be offside in-goals. Surely Angus should have asked George again, as he should know you can be offside in-goals? Or is it that once the ref has deferred to the TMO he has to abide by the TMO's decision?
(I can recall at least once where the ref has watched the incident on the screen whilst the TMO was reviewing play, and the ref has then made a decision without the TMO adjudicating!)
No I heard George clearly, he said:
"I've got something awful on my balls"
Angus: "On your what"
George: "There's something awful on the side of my balls"
Angus: (strange expression on his face) Blue or Red Ball?
George: Brown really
Previously George had dropped his Steedens in the mud, and he'd been trying to rub one off all night - just like every week
